While fans were devastated about the show ending, they can be sure that the emotion the programme is known for will be heart-wrenching as ever.
Wait, what is This Is Us?
For those that haven't been subjected to the emotional turmoil of This Is Us, the show follows a set of three siblings born on the same day.
Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) are the biological twins to Jack and Rebecca Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore) who also adopt Randall (Sterling K. Brown).
This Is Us is a non-linear show, jumping between timelines so we see the characters as their past, present and future selves.
Remind me, what happened in season five?
Season five was a BIG one. Madison call off the nuptials after Kevin couldn't say that he was in love with her.
Rebecca then asks Kevin to build the house that Jack designed as a distraction. This is also where we see everyone by Rebecca's side in the future when she is dying.
Another time jump into the future shows us how Kevin is prepping for another wedding - but not his own. This is alongside other easter eggs such as a New Yorker profile of Randall calling him a "rising star" and Jack's estranged brother Nicky being married.
The viewers then see Kate appear in a white wedding dress. This is suspicious because as far as we know, the present Kate and Toby had decided to make long-distance marriage work.
Kevin runs into Phillip, Kate's music school boss who had refusd her previous resignation that would have helped her move closer to Toby. He calls himself Kevin's "brother-in-law" and we find out that Kate is actually marrying Phillip.
What can we expect from the final season?
In the featurette released ahead of the This Is Us sixth season, the main cast teases what audiences can expect from the final episodes.
Milo Ventimiglia said: "I think the audience can expect a lot going into that last year. I think it's going to resonate, stay with people for a long time".
"People have been very patient and that patience will definitely be rewarded", reassured Mandy Moore.
We can expect that Rebecca's storyline will dominate a large part of the final season as the show's creator, Dan Fogelman, has said fans will gain greater insight into her and Miguel's relationship.
We'll also see her death as a result of the flash-forward back in season five.
Justin Hartley shared in the cast's intense emotion on the featurette. He said: "I really hate that this show is coming to an end. If I'm being honest, I could probably do this for the rest of my life".
Fogelman has kept his cards close to his chest on what will happen with Kevin's love life, saying that they have an endgame in mind but warning that not everyone needs to end up betrothed.
When will the final season air?
Since This Is Us released season five later than usual due to the pandemic, the sixth season will not air in its typical slot of the third week of September.
Instead, we can expect it to drop in early 2022, although there is no confirmed date yet. However, this does mean that they won't have to have a midseason break so all episodes will air uninterrupted.
Hopefully, there won't be too much of a gap between its broadcast in the US and the UK. But one thing's for sure, we're going to need a LOT of tissues.
