A mum was arrested after being accused of faking her daughter’s cancer to collect thousands of dollars in donations.

Pamela Reed, who hails from Ohio, was arrested earlier this week (8 January) and charged with theft by deception after allegedly faking that her seven-year-old has cancer.

The Noble County Sheriff's Office has since issued a lengthy statement on the situation after confirming that the child did not, in fact, have cancer.

The statement reads: "On January 4, 2024, the Noble County Sheriff's Office and Noble County Children’s Services received information regarding a potential theft by deception.

"The information that was relayed was in reference to a local child that had been publicly portrayed to be fighting cancer. "Several local organisations had participated in fund raising efforts and had made monetary contributions to help the family offset medical expenses."

After obtaining information on the case, Sheriff Mackie, joined by Detectives and Children Services, launched an investigation into the allegation and were able to confirm that the seven-year-old did not have cancer.

Not only this, but authorities also confirmed that one local organisation had donated approximately a staggering $8,000 to the family to aid in the 'cancer treatment expenses'.

"Reed was interviewed and admitted during questioning that she had exaggerated and fabricated medical conditions to receive monetary donations from local organisations."

"Child abuse and neglect isn't always cut and dry, cookie cutter scenarios. If you as a professional or as a member of our community feel like something just isn’t quite right, don't hesitate, make the report. The grit and devotion of this team is inspiring."

The Noble County Sheriff's Office concluded their statement telling the public: "If you or an organization you are involved with may have been a victim in this case please contact the contact the Noble County Sheriff’s office at 740-7325631."
