An American man tragically died while proposing to his girlfriend underwater on holiday in Tanzania.

Steven Weber was staying with his girlfriend Kenesha Antoine in a £1,300-a-night submerged cabin at the exclusive Manta Resort off Pemba Island when he drowned on Thursday, 19th September

On the third day of their four-night stay, the Baton Rouge native dived into the water while Kenesha remained inside the villa, which is anchored in water around 10 meters deep, and proposed.

In footage shared on Facebook, Steven can be seen wearing a mask and fins while holding up a note to the cabin's glass window, which asked her to marry him.

The note read: "I can't hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But... everything I love about you, I love more every day!"

In the video, Steve could be seen taking out a ring from his pocket before making his way up to the surface. However, his other half said he "never emerged from those depths".

Speaking about his death in a Facebook post, Kenesha wrote: "You were a bright light to everyone you encountered. You never met a stranger, and you brought so much joy to so many people.

"You were kind, compassionate, you regularly made me cry with laughter, and you showered me with a love like none I'd ever experienced.

She continued: "You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, 'Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!'

"We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruellest twist of fate imaginable.

Adding: "I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together."

In the wake of the fatal incident, Matthew Saus, CEO of the Manta Resort, said "everyone is shaken to the core" by Steven's death.

Speaking to the BBC about the tragedy, he said his staff responded to a "problem in the water", but when they arrived "absolutely nothing could be done"

Following his death, Steven's sister Mandy Hoffman set up a GoFundMe page in the hope of raising $25,000 to bring his remains back to the States and to cover funeral costs. If you would like to donate, please click here.
