A wild new sex trend is surging in popularity through Gen Z and beyond, thanks to the emergence of certain sex toys.

Now, we’ve already had an array of niche bedroom trends gaining traction in the mainstream, thanks to social media, and now, another one is on the horizon - and it’s a way of masturbating that apparently gives men 'mind-blowing' orgasms.

We’re talking about erotic electrostimulation, also known as ‘e-stim’ or ‘electrosex’.

This X-rated method of masturbation involves sending low-voltage electrical currents through the body to stimulate nerve endings and muscles for sexual pleasure.

While it’s seemingly more popular for men, women can, of course, take part, and it’s been hailed as a great way to achieve hands-free stimulation.

Sexologist Becky Crepsley-Fox told Metro that ‘electrosex’ is a popular practice within BDSM communities, using the low-voltage electrical currents to ‘stimulate nerve and muscle endings, creating heightened sensation throughout the body’.

She explained to the publication: “For people with penises, increased engorgement can create a sensation of greater firmness.

“The testicles are particularly responsive - the skin is thin, nerve endings are densely packed, and many people find even low-level current there produces an intense sensation.”

It's been around since the early 2000s, but now, E-stim toys have even made their way into most mainstream sex toy shops, increasing the trend's popularity.

So, how exactly do you go about taking part in ‘electrosex?’

Well, firstly, it’s important to point out that you should definitely not try this out at home without the correct and safe sex toys and equipment - don’t go using household appliances or putting your phone charger anywhere where it doesn’t belong.

The expert explained that E-stim is mostly achieved through a shaft ring, which sends mild electrical pulses throughout the penis.

The ring will be connected to a stimulator that allows you to change the strength of the electrical pulse based on what’s, ahem, working for you.

Becky told Metro that adhesive pads are also an option to attach to your testicles, as are insertable toys for both anal and vaginal use.

The sexpert said: “A typical set-up might place a loop around the shaft and a second contact on the perineum or inner thigh, allowing current to travel through a highly sensitive pathway.

“Vaginal users might combine a probe with an adhesive pad placed above the pubic mound.”

However, as to be expected, this is a sex trend that’s considered quite dangerous and comes with its risks.

The sexologist warned that using devices or placing pads too high on the body can cause cardiac disruption, and so anyone with a heart condition or epilepsy shouldn’t try electrosex.

Doing so anywhere near the head or neck can also trigger seizures, so this should also be firmly avoided.

The brand ElectraStim echoes that stimulation should only ever be applied below the waist, and you should also ensure that your chosen electrodes are fit for purpose.

For example, don't use a probe for anal stimulation unless it is stated as being suitable for anal play.

You should also not take part in electro sex if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have any sort of heart condition (including pacemakers)
  • You are suffering from any sort of genital injury or disorder
