The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik says she refuses to give her children medications or antibiotics

Bialik confessed to not giving her children medications or antibiotics back in 2014

Mayim Bialik once revealed that she does not give her young children children medications or antibiotics, despite them regularly falling unwell.

The Big Bang Theory star, now 46, made the revelation about her unusual parenting decision on the blog Kveller, where she also wrote about breastfeeding and attachment parenting.

She told HuffPost Live that she has faced a lot of backlash for opening up about her parenting techniques, including when she breastfed her son, then three, on a subway in New York City.

"I received a tremendous amount of backlash," she revealed. "What I like to point out is that was the best way for that subway ride to be pleasant for everyone. It was the end of a very long day."

However, this was almost certainly the least controversial thing the actress has done as a parent.

Back in 2014 she revealed that her children, then aged six and three and a half, have had 'just about every ailment, sickness and flu' but she has never given them medication or antibiotics.

Bialik admitted: "Neither of our sons has ever been on antibiotics, nor do we give them Tylenol, Motrin, antihistamines or cough syrup.

"I've learned from talking to other moms that almost everything you have right now in your home and your heart is enough to deal with most everything. I'm not arguing to be negligent."

But while she had previously revealed that her sons were not vaccinated, she explained in a later interview that they did receive their vaccinations before the Covid-19 pandemic and that she is not anti-vax.

She clarified to The Daily Beast: "My kids were vaccinated before [the pandemic]. I think the only change is that I chose to publicly talk about it.

The actress said she's never given her sons medicine before.

"At the time that I wrote [a] book [about parenting] about my kids when they were little, it's true - they were not vaccinated at that time. But no, my kids were vaccinated before the pandemic and I'm typically someone who takes a flu shot when I have to work with lots of people."

She went on to reveal in a YouTube video that both she and her children would be receiving the Covid-19 vaccine and explained why her children were not vaccinated at one point.

"Some children have allergies which are exacerbated by ingredients in vaccines, some children are highly susceptible to seizures from fevers which vaccines can cause, some children have compromised immune systems," she said.

"As of today, my children may not have had every one of the vaccinations that your children have, but my children are vaccinated. I repeat, my children are vaccinated."
