We don’t have long until the pitch black comedy returns.

Succession is rightly one of the most popular shows on television right now.

HBO's dark comedy drama follows billionaire Logan Roy who is looking to retire from his media empire, and pits his children against each other as he looks to name his successor.

While a sleeper hit, Succession has since risen to prominence after sweeping the board at the 2020 Emmy Awards, taking the top gong for Outstanding Drama Series among others.

The show has been so well received, it was renewed for a third season on HBO in August 2019 before the second season had even finished airing.

Here's what we can expect from the latest series...

When is Succession season 3 on TV?

We don't have long to wait at all, with the official Twitter account confirming the show will air in October. Exciting!

The long-anticipated third season of Succession was intended to air in 2020, however, production was halted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Filming resumed towards the end of 2020, with star Brian Cox revealing the show was endeavouring to be extra careful.

"HBO wants to protect that show because it's a key show for them," he told The Big Issue. "People have been really been watching it quite obsessively, sometimes two or three times over. So they're very protective of us and we have to get all the protocols right.

"We've got our own medical department dealing with the COVID thing. We'll get going, but not until maybe November at the soonest, maybe even not until the beginning of next year."

Who stars in Succession season 3?

As always, the love-to-hate Roys will all be returning as the family war ups its ante.

Brian Cox will return as patriarch Logan Roy, with Jeremy Strong back as son Kendall - who has struggled to earn his father's respect. Hiam Abass will play Marcia Roy once more, Logan's third wife who has yet to earn his children's trust. Sarah Snook returns as Shiv, Logan's only daughter whose career in politics is often at odds with the Waystar Empire. Elsewhere Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen and J. Smith-Cameron will all be back, playing Roman, Connor, cousin Greg, Tom and Gerri, respectively.

Newcomers to season 3 include: Brown Sugar star Sanaa Lathan, who will play well-to-do New York lawyer Lisa Arthur, The Good Wife star Linda Emond as Michelle-Anne Vanderhoven, a senior White House aide and Jihae John as Berry Schneider, a leading Public Relations consultant.

What will happen in Succession season 3?

Succession fans will know season 2 ended on a real cliffhanger, which will be addressed in the next season.

The official synopsis reads: "Ambushed by his rebellious son Kendall at the end of Season 2, Logan Roy begins Season 3 in a perilous position.

"Scrambling to secure familial, political, and financial alliances, tensions rise as a bitter corporate battle threatens to turn into a family civil war."

The season will also likely explore Shiv and Tom's failing marriage and Connor's probably quite laughable presidential campaign.

It has been hinted the coronavirus pandemic may be shown on screen. Sarah Snook told Variety: "I think it's a thing that everybody's aware of, and audiences are really intuitive these days.

"Even just seeing a mask in the background of something or hand sanitizer, those things that have become part of our daily lives, those things maybe, but nothing that is so overt that is going to really tackle it head on, because that's not the show. We want to see the Roys doing the thing that they've been doing that we love, not pivoting towards a pandemic story."

And showrunner Jesse Armstrong has teased that season 3 of Succession may reveal who is the true air to Waystar Royco - which could mean it's the final season.

"It's not the sort of show which should go on forever, because there's a question set up in the title of the show and I think it's a question you eventually want answered," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Passers-by have reported seeing Nicholas Braun filming "a big scene", so perhaps we should see more of cousin Greg coming up in season 3...

Is there a trailer for Succession season 3?

Currently, no - we still don't know when it'll be on TV at this point.

However, you can enjoy Succession season 2 trailer for the time being.

What happened in Succession season 2?

The big event of Succession season 2, which will fuel the events of the upcoming season, centered around Kendall Roy in some of the most nail-biting TV we've watched since Game of Thrones. With cousin Greg's backing, Kendall exposed a huge cover-up that his father has been involved in on national television, leaving the family reputation in tatters. Could Kendall's actions result in things becoming increasingly bitter for the Roy's?
