In the final episode of Making a Monster, Crime+Investigation's eight-part series, some of the world's leading forensic psychiatrists and psychologists will analyse the psyche of Ross, attempting to understand what led the Cornell University graduate to commit such appalling crimes.
Between 1981 and 1984, Ross murdered eight girls and women aged between 14 and 25 in locations across New York and Connecticut, raping seven out of eight of them.
In all known cases, Ross would kidnap the women and lead them into a wooded area, before raping them, then asking them to turn face-down before strangling them.
The killer was also accused of raping, but not killing, a 21-year-old woman in 1983.
When he was caught, Ross confessed to all eight murders but was only convicted for the last four of them. At his trial, he pleaded the insanity defence and on 6th July 1987, he was sentenced to death by a judge in Connecticut.
Ross spent 18 years on death row before his execution in May 2005.
