While getting on a dog is a huge undertaking, naming your beloved pooch is equally a big decision to make.

It's hard to know what exactly encapsulates your canine companion's personality and interests - but more importantly, what doesn't sound ridiculous should (and when) you have to shout their name aloud in a park.

While Dog McDoggins doesn't quite cut the mustard for us on this occasion, new data has predicted what the most popular dog names are likely to be in 2020 - and they're interesting to say the least.

According to dog chew brand, Tasty Bone, nearly one in five pups were named after a film character in 2019 and leading the pack for the year ahead is Charlie, in honour of the upcoming Charlie's Angels reboot.

The popular moniker has been in the top 10 for the past two years but shot straight to the top with the impending flick; starring Elizabeth Banks and Kristen Stewart, coming to cinemas next month.

With the final instalment of the Avengers franchise proving to be a worldwide smash earlier this year, comic book characters are set to continue to influence dog owners in 2020.

Following the news of a Loki spin-off and the impending Birds of Prey film about Harley Quinn coming to cinemas, park goers should expect to hear these Marvel and DC names screamed across fields come 2020.

New cinema releases appear to be the main source of inspiration for dog owners as Tasty Bone suggested that Luke, after Luke Skywalker, will be another popular pet name next year.

Inspired by the new Star Wars flick Rise of Skywalker, which is scheduled to be released in December, the online brand suggested this one will crop up throughout the year.

Disney has long been a source of many pet names and Tasty Bone predict that dogs called after Frozen 2's Elsa, Lady & The Tramp's Lady as well as The Lion King's Simba will more than likely increase in the coming year due to the popularity of the live action remakes.

Although Twilight was released in 2008, its influence continues to shine bright as Bella is popular as ever.

But it's not just movies that are influencing dog owners but also their favourite stars.

Both Millie and Maggie have found themselves in the top 10, no doubt because of Millie Bobby Brown's turn as Eleven in Stranger Things and Dame Maggie Smith's return to Downtown Abbey.
