Fans Defend Meghan Markle's Salute To Freedom Gala Dress After Backlash For Being 'Low Cut'

Fans Defend Meghan Markle's Salute To Freedom Gala Dress After Backlash For Being 'Low Cut'

The Duchess of Sussex's stunning red dress at the Salute to Freedom gala has caused a stir on social media.

We regret to inform you that women's outfits are still being policed by trolls on social media. Unfortunately, Meghan Markle is no stranger to backlash online and after attending the the 2021 Salute to Freedom gala in New York City on Wednesday, her red dress has sparked controversy online.

The Duchess of Sussex, 40, wore a jaw-dropping Carolina Herrera red gown paired with slingback heels by Giuseppe Zanotti and a poppy for Remembrance Day.

However, some social media users took issue with the neckline on the dress as well as the poppy, which she also wore during her New York Times DealBook Online Summit interview on Tuesday.

One Twitter user said: "Doesn’t she even know what the poppy means? Wearing a low-cut blood-red dress is such bad taste. She’s been flaunting that poppy for several days now. Meghan Markle has no shame. She’s so exploitive! [sic]"

Other Twitter users accused the Duchess of trying to steal attention away from the event. "Wrong dress for the event," one wrote. "Honestly she would have better worn a simple black dress and the poppy and that’s it. It’s about the veterans not about her. Any person with respect won’t try and take the shine away from the [people] being actually honoured. Who [advises] Meghan?"

While a third person said: "This is a GRAMMYs dress. If she's going to flog her Royal title, she should dress like a Royal or expect criticism. If she went back to being just Meghan Markle, she could dress & do whatever she pleased & nobody would have a thing to say about it."

Lots more comments called the dress 'unflattering' and questioned her styling choices.

Yep, we can't believe it either.

Despite the intense backlash, fans on social media jumped to Meghan's defence and praised the Duchess, while urging other social media users to 'be kind'.

A woman on Twitter called the backlash 'bullying' and urged people to remember Meghan only recently welcomed her second child, daughter Lili.

"I’m not a fan of Meghan Markle, but I am shocked and disgusted at the levels of bullying I’ve seen this morning. GROWN WOMEN taking time out of their day to slag off her dress and body. She’s not long had a baby ffs!!!….. you can just ignore her you know #bekind."

After pictures of the couple were shared on Instagram, another woman made a similar comment. "Gorgeous couple! To all the haters she had a baby just a few months ago and isn't conforming to the 'snap back' women are pressured into. She looks healthy, happy and glowing.

She added: "Happy for them."

More fans reacted to the stunning pictures of the Sussexes at the gala by showering the couple with praise.

"We really do stan an intelligent, compassionate & beautiful couple," one Twitter user declared.

"No I don’t think you understand…I’m OBSESSED with Harry and Meghan," a second person joked.

A third wrote: "Red is definitely her colour."

Let women wear what they want!
