Fashion can be a perfect way to express yourself and have some fun.

But certain people still hold beliefs in what certain people 'should' or 'shouldn't' wear.

Candace Leslie Cima, an influencer from New York, has made it her mission to prove those people wrong.

Her Instagram, @lifeinmy70s, has garnered over 170,000 followers as she endeavours to show off her good looks, regardless of her age.

Her bio reads: "Exercise, Fashion & Lifestyle at age 76. Reinvent yourself as you age. 'Aging is Changing' Your Best Time is Now!"

But one of her recent looks has sparked a fierce debate in the comments section.

She rocked an outfit that some of her followers have deemed 'inappropriate' for her age.

One wrote: "Not suitable for the arms after a certain age."

Another agreed: "Great color and style; however, you must wear the sweater over it. The dress is not attractive on you without the sweater over it."

One of Candace's outfit has sparked debate online.

A third added: "Only wear it with the top on. Doesn’t look great without it."

A fourth rudely stated: "Makes your otherwise flat stomach look pouchy."

However, some of Candace's fans did spring to her defence.

One loyal follower wrote: "I think it looks great. The people that are replying with nasty comments are just jealous cos they can’t pull it off. Hon, you look good!!! And if others complain, oh well, cos I was taught that if you don’t like something don’t say anything at all."

While another gushed: "Looks amazing on you! You've got a great body and a gorgeous face. You definitely do not look your age. Wish I looked as good as you. Enjoy wearing the dress... top on or off. You got it!!!"

Her dress caused an onslaught of trolling.

It seems as though Candace isn't going to let the haters bring her down.

She told Today: "It’s not the first time this has happened, but this one surprised me. People have such outdated notions about age-appropriate fashion, and that needs to change."

She also told The Independent: "I was not aware that many women believe that an older woman should not show her arms as she ages.

"I actually had never heard that and since I have always worn sleeveless styles I thought nothing about posting these fashions on my sites. It was a shock to me when I learned that it was a 'thing' with some women and started to get criticism for it.

"The criticism does not bother me at all as every woman should be proud of who she is and be comfortable with her style."
