Women are calling for Olly Murs' new single to be taken off air due to its 'cruel' and 'disgusting' lyrics.

The track is titled 'I Hate You When You're Drunk', and as you can probably tell from the title, the song is all about despising the behaviour of a loved one when they're boozed-up.

The former X Factor contestant's new tune is as upbeat and jaunty as you'd expect from this brand of bland pop, but people think the lyrics are actually quite sinister.

The track opens: "Oh you're slurring all your words / There's makeup on your shirt /You're dancing on the tables can't you see / That you look like a mess and you're singing Whitney whoa / Oh I hate you, hate you, I hate you, hate you when you're drunk."

In the second verse, the 38-year-old sings: "Oh you got them drunken eyes / Should we call it a night / Cos you've been telling stories 4/5 times / Yeah I've heard it before and my ears are bleeding whoa."

People have labelled the lyrics 'disgusting'.

And the chorus follows a similar theme: "Because you wanna buy champagne / And you wanna throw the shots back / And now you're taking photographs / Why am I the only one that don’t laugh / Oh I hate you, hate you, I hate you, hate you when you're drunk / So quit acting like a fool cos I hate you when you're drunk."

Murs' unrelenting hatred of his p****d company won't be subsiding the day after either.

He sings: "Oh when the morning comes you'll blame it on me / And when you ask for a hug I got no sympathy / Because I hate you when you're drunk."

Arguably the most 'offensive' lyrics of the lot come right at the end, when Murs inexplicably rounds off the song by belting out 'La La La La La' over, and over, again.

If all of the above has whet your appetite, you can hear the song for yourself here:

The lyrics have been widely criticised, with musician Self Esteem sharing them on Twitter, captioning the post: "Presented without comment."

Another wrote: "Olly Murs song is so horrible already for obvious reasons but then he also had to cop the melody from My Girl by the temptations and make it sound like cotton eyed joe?"

And another added: "Oh @ollymurs what the f**k have you done. Good luck with the new song buddy you're going to need it you gaslighting, sexist, soggy digestive biscuit of a man.

"@BBCRadio2 please stop playing it, it's abhorrent."

While DJ Shaun Keaveny wrote: "Olly Murs is quite the sad, controlling boyfriend according to the lyrics of his new song, 'I Hate You When You’re Drunk'.

"I look forward to her reply song 'I Hate You When You Sing'."

He added: "Imagine putting a track like that out into the world, being proud of the sentiment? It's totally mad!"

Ahead of the track's release, Murs said it 'was a fun song to write as there have been so many times where a friend, family member or loved one has had one too many'.

He added that it was 'a light-hearted take from the sober person's point of view'.

Tyla has contacted Murs' reps and EMI Records for comment.
