The news was announced on the Channel 4 Twitter page

Sad news in - Gogglebox favourite Mary Cook has died.

Mary, who sat on the left, regularly featured on the programme alongside close pal Marina.

The news was confirmed by the Gogglebox team on Twitter.

"We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side," the statement read. "She will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.

"Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and dear friend to many, Mary, who worked in the hospitality trade, had been married and widowed twice.

"Bristolians Mary and Marina met at St Monica Trust retirement village over ten years ago and have remained friends ever since. They joined Gogglebox in 2016 at the start of season eight and became instant fan favourites thanks due to their brilliant, witty and often cheeky comments.

"Mary will be sorely missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew."

Both Mary and Marina had left viewers in stitches through their candid confessions while on Gogglebox.

One particularly memorable incident saw Mary and Marina discuss male strippers after they watched The All New Full Monty.

Both Mary and Marina had been absent in more recent episodes of Gogglebox.

Executive producer Tania Alexander explained the pair had been 'temporarily dropped' from the series, due to health and safety concerns throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

"Unfortunately, it was not possible to film with the full cast," she wrote in a piece published in The Telegraph last year. "For example, we took the decision to tell Mary and Marina, who are in their 90s and live in a care home, that we didn't want them put at any risk so we should stop filming with them altogether.

"The ladies are safe and well looked after but often tell us they dearly miss the crews and the fun they have during filming each week."
