Any Brit knows there's no better pleasure in life than a good cup of tea. But, it turns out that we're pretty much all drinking sub par cuppas on the regular, according to experts.

Yep, the tea boffins over at Yorkshire Tea say that we should actually be leaving out tea bags in for four to five minutes before taking a sip, to "unlock all the flavour".

But new research has found that on average, Brits only brew tea for between one minute and ten seconds (basically, we're far too impatient!).

These details were gathered by Tic Watches, who surveyed a total of 2,000 adults about their tea drinking habits.

They found that just one in 50 (two per cent) of UK tea-drinkers follow this guidance.

In fact, Brits are three times more likely to remove the teabag in under 10 seconds (6 per cent) than they are to brew for the recommended length.

The research also dove into which areas of the country made the best cuppa. Across the UK, it was discovered that Mancunians make the best brews, with five per cent listening to the experts and waiting for four minutes (which is more than any other city).

Manchester's brewing time is also the longest, on average - although it is still significantly shorter than it should be.

On the other end of the spectrum, Bristolians make the weakest tea, with an average time of just 47 seconds.

Shocking.

It turns out age is also a factor in how good your brew is. Millennials (25-34s) tend to drink the strongest tea (brewing for 1 minute, 17 seconds, on average) while baby boomers (over 65s) prefer the weakest cuppa (with an average of 1 minute, 6 seconds).

Here's a rundown of tea brewing time by city:

1) Manchester - 1 minute, 26 seconds

2) Southampton - 1 minute, 20 seconds

3) Nottingham - 1 minute, 14 seconds

4) London - 1 minute, 14 seconds

5) Norwich - 1 minute, 10 seconds

6) Leeds - 1 minute, 2 seconds

7) Glasgow - 59 seconds / Newcastle - 59 seconds

8) Birmingham - 56 seconds

9) Bristol - 47 seconds

*UK average - 1 minute, 10 seconds
