A princess has broken royal protocol on her 18th birthday and people are not happy about it.

Whether you’re of royal blood or not, being 18 is something that brings out the rebellious side of all of us. For Princess Isabella of Denmark, she too is switching things up in her own household to mark the special occasion.

It all began when the princess, who is the daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, had her official portraits to mark the big day (21 April), and she decided that she had to pose with something that we all carry around with us and typically use when posting to our social media too.

That’s right, a mobile phone.

Now, I bet you’ve never seen a princess pose with a phone before when having a portrait taken, but there's a first for everything.

The Danish Royal House released images of Princess Isabella, which shows her smiling at the camera whilst holding her phone.

Isabella, who is second in line to the throne after her 19-year-old brother, Crown Prince Christian, shared a message of thanks to everyone who congratulated her on her special day.

She shared on Instagram: “It has been really nice that so many people have spent their time, thought and effort to make my day so special. This means a lot to me.”

A lot of people loved her picture and her incorporation of modern times, as one commenter bigged her up, writing: “Love this official picture of Danish princess Isabella on her 18th birthday – when old world royalty meets today’s tech reality.”

Another said: “Check out that iPhone in her hand – hello relatable Princess,” while a third commented: “I love this royal family so much, she is just like a normal teenager, got her iPhone in hand and having her parents take quick snap shots of her. Happy birthday.”

Others, however, weren't in agreement.

One person wrote: “This is bizarre…. Can’t decide if it’s pro or anti-modern phone addiction. Is this ‘the ultimate modern princess’ or a depressing indictment of modern culture?”

Another said: “Nice but this is silly with that phone,” while someone else added: “Not sure how I feel about this.”

Princess Isabella isn't the only royal to have celebrated a birthday recently.

Prince Louis, who is the third child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, had his seventh birthday celebrations on Wednesday (23 April), with a portrait also being released of the young prince.

And the photo, as well as the accompanying video, delighted royal fans, who couldn't help but notice Louis' similarity to a certain someone.
