As some of the biggest Mamma Mia! and Mean Girls fans about, we were all as shocked as you to learn that we have in fact been pronouncing Amanda Seyfried's name wrong this whole time.

Yep, the 35-year-old movie star made the revelation after she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, for her role in Mank.

The award was presented by Brad Pitt, who won for Best Supporting Actor last year, and as he spoke on the podium, fans were shocked to hear how he said Amanda's name.

As per his guidance, we can confirm it's pronounced :"Sigh-fred".

Previously, many fans thought Amanda's surname was pronounced "Say-freed" or "Sea-fred".

But, commenting on a video of Brad announcing the nominees, Amanda confirmed his pronunciation was the correct one.

"Correct pronunciation of 'Seyfried' by Brad Pitt. Thank you, @theacademy," she wrote.

Amanda shared the clip with this comment (

"He taught me how to pronounce your name. Such an iconic moment," wrote one fan in the comments.

While another penned: "YES @mingey, I've been pronouncing it like this forever and everyone thinks I'm saying it wrong".

"Oh. I have been saying it wrong all this time," a third quipped.

As a fourth fawned: "How would I love to have BP saying my name".

Best Supporting Actress actually went to Youn Yuh-jung, for her role in Minari.

However, at least Amanda's nomination gave her an opportunity to school people on how her name's pronounced.

Amanda is best known for starring in the likes of teen comedy Mean Girl back in 2004, before going on to star in the Mamma Mia! franchise, debuting alongside Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan in 2008.

Amanda may not have won this award, but she she did bag the Satellite Award for Best Cast - Motion Picture for 2012's Les Misérables, Plus, she was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for the same movie.

Her performance as Marion Davies in biographical drama Mank (2020) didn't just win praise at the Oscars, also landing her nominations at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards (where she was up for Best Supporting Actress) and the Golden Globes (also for Best Supporting Actress).

We think Brad Pitt deserves an award just for getting her name right, tbh.
