How long a man 'lasts in the bedroom' can be indicator to underlying health issues

What timing in the bedroom might reveal about overall male health

When it comes to sex, there’s no shortage of myths about how long things should last for men in the bedroom, and some potential reasons are more concerning than others.

Still, how long a man lasts can definitely become a frequent source of anxiety for some. While one type may worry about finishing too quickly, others feel pressure to keep going for longer than feels natural, and many don’t realise that changes in sexual performance can sometimes reflect what’s happening elsewhere in the body. While occasional variation is completely normal, persistent shifts in stamina or control might be worth paying attention to.

According to health experts, how long a man lasts during sex can sometimes be a clue to underlying health issues, ranging from hormone imbalances to chronic conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders.

Premature ejaculation (short duration) causes

Premature ejaculation, for example, is more common than many people think. According to Mayo Clinic, as many as one in three people report experiencing it at some point, and it can be influenced by a mix of psychological and physical factors. Stress, anxiety, and relationship worries may play a role, but biological triggers such as irregular hormone levels or prostate problems can also be involved.

Thyroid problems impacting performance

Alternatively, Healthy Male has pointed out that an overactive thyroid has even been linked to finishing sooner than expected, while an underactive thyroid may contribute to delayed ejaculation.

Because thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, mood, and energy levels, imbalances can impact libido, arousal, and stamina, symptoms — like fatigue, low mood, or low sex drive. As a result, it may become harder to feel fully engaged, which can in turn affect how long someone lasts during intimacy.

Delayed ejaculation causes

Delayed ejaculation, where reaching climax takes much longer or doesn’t happen at all, can sometimes be tied to nerve damage, certain medications, or long-term conditions such as diabetes, as reported by the NHS. However, Diabetes UK found that high blood sugar levels over time can affect nerves and blood vessels, potentially altering sensation and sexual response.

In some cases, ejaculation problems may appear suddenly after years without issues, which is why doctors often encourage people to speak up if something changes.

How erectile dysfunction starts & affects the bedroom

Erectile dysfunction is another factor that can influence how long sex lasts. Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection may lead to rushing or performance anxiety, creating a cycle that affects ejaculation timing.

Physical health plays a major role here — as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are all linked to erectile problems; and hormone levels, including testosterone, may also be involved.

There are solutions, even if you have an underlying condition

For some men living with chronic conditions, treatment can make a noticeable difference. For instance, Paul, who shared his story with Diabetes UK about his erection problems after getting type 2 diabetes, found relief in the medication for his neuropathy (nerve damage); he said: "More than half the time I can do without the tablets, but it’s good to know they are there as a back up." Experiences like this are a great highlight of how medical support and lifestyle changes can improve both confidence and sexual wellbeing.

Overall, the heart of what these experts are saying is not to panic over occasional performance issues, but to note any changes or patterns, so they can be properly addressed. If timing changes suddenly, happens most of the time, or starts to cause distress, that’s when it could be a sign to check in with a healthcare professional.
