The final ever season of well-loved anthology series Inside No. 9 has kicked off with a bang.

Written and created by Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton who also star in the show, Inside No. 9 is an expertly written mind-bender that always manages to shock audiences with a twist - even though we know there’s one coming.

Each and every season of the TV show has been met with critical acclaim overall, and it seems this final season is heading in the same direction.

The final season is the pair’s ninth - which is one of those lovely little things that just makes sense, even if we don’t want to say goodbye.

Alongside Reece and Steve, the episodes often feature an ensemble cast, loaded with many talented and recognisable faces.

The first episode of the last season, Boo to a Goose, takes place on a Merseyrail train, and includes huge names such as Siobhan Finneran, Charlie Cooper and Mark Bonnar.

While the base premise of the episodes are usually simple, what follows is anything but and it’s an incredible feat that Reece and Steve are still able to pull this off after so many years.

Inside No. 9 has accrued an incredible 100% critics score on TV and film aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The first episode aired on 8 May, and social media was lit up during and after broadcast, with viewers expressing their amazement with how they just didn’t see that coming.

One person wrote: “Absolute banger of a first episode of the season. The guys are so creative with their plot twists! Didn't see that coming! There's a reason why Inside Number 9 is one of my all time favourite series.”

Another added: “The ending of #InsideNo9 had me shook, i did not see the plot going that way! Kicking off the final season in true style!”

A third added: “Just watched the first of the new series of ‘Inside no 9’ ! What a wonderful episode. Brilliantly scripted, incredibly intriguing and then the typical huge twist. Outstanding.”

A fourth chimed: “Heart pounding twist! #InsideNo9's finale blindsided me. Masterful storytelling, a thrilling start to the last season. Bravo! Mindblown.”

Of the series coming to an end, Reece and Steve both tweeted their thoughts.

After filming had wrapped in February, Reece wrote: “The end. That's it for Inside No. 9 series 9. What a journey the last 10 years have been. But today we arrived at the final stop. So long. Farewell. And thanks for all your kind support and love for the show over the years. We'll miss it."

Steve then said: “Time to say goodbye to #InsideNo9 having just wrapped series 9. This takes us to 55 episodes, a very decent innings. Mixed emotions but can't wait to share what we've made."

Inside No. 9 airs on Wednesdays on BBC Two, and past episodes are available to watch on iPlayer.
