Period dramas have really been having a moment as of recent and any lovers of the genre are clearly itching for another fix now that they've rattled through the first part of Bridgerton's season three.

We already have Belgravia and The Tudors on our radar but now viewers are being urged to watch a raunchy BBC period drama with a whopping 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The TV series, which first hit our screens back in 2019, is set in the 1830s in Yorkshire.

The 16-episode-strong series is based on the collected diaries of real-life landowner and industrialist, Anne Lister, played by Suranne Jones, which contains over four million words and are written largely in secret code.

Depicting Lister as 'the first modern lesbian', the series is billed as being 'inspired by' two books about Lister by Jill Liddington, Female Fortune and Nature's Domain.

The diaries, which were decoded and transcribed by Helena Whitbread, excellently document a whole lifetime of lesbian relationships.

It also stars the likes of Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker, Lister's fiancée, and later, wife and Joe Armstrong as Samuel Washington, land steward for both Walker and Lister.

If you hadn't guessed it already, the series is none other than Gentleman Jack and fans are clearly loving it.

Check out the official trailer here:

One X user penned: "I think only Gentleman Jack has been one of the only erotic shows I ever seen. The tension between them is so real and their romance is so well constructed."

A second chimed in: "I saw here in #gentlemanjack for the first time the seduction game becoming a real intimate affinity, with Anne Lister not fearing to be vulnerable and Ann Walker's showing her resilience wanting to help the woman she loves. So much truth and courage. #SaveGentlemanJack."
