Why Meghan Trainor’s birth announcement has sparked unfair backlash as fans defend singer

The 'All About That Bass' singer announced that she and husband Daryl Sabara have welcomed their third child via surrogate

Meghan Trainor and her husband, Daryl Sabara, have just introduced their third child to the world - an adorable baby girl called Mikey Moon who was born last week.

However, the 32-year-old singer's emotional and happy announcement has quickly become overshadowed by unfair criticism for welcoming her daughter via surrogate.

Meghan, who already has two sons with Daryl - Riley, four, and two-year-old Barry - took to Instagram earlier today (21 January) to share that little Mikey was born on 18 January, 'thanks to our incredible, superwoman surrogate'.

"We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses, teams who made this dream possible," she penned, before explaining that they had 'endless conversations with our doctors' and this was 'the safest way' for them to be able to 'continue growing' their family.

"We are over the moon in love with this precious girl. Riley and Barry have been so excited, they even got to choose her middle name. We are going to enjoy our family time now, love you all," Meghan gushed.

The post was also accompanied by a carousel of images, the first of which showed Meghan tearfully cradling her newborn and enjoying some skin-to-skin contact.

But bizarrely, the duo have been met with unexpected criticism from social media commentators who have taken issue with their decision to use a surrogate.

In recent years, as we saw when Lily Collins experienced similar backlash in February, people are having some pretty passionate responses to surrogacy, especially when celebrities are involved. This includes labelling it as 'elitist' and 'exploitative' and citing the apparent financial divide between the world's most affluent individuals, and 'normal' women, who can't afford to splash five figures on IVF or other fertility treatments.

One Reddit user wrote: "Honestly, it kinda grosses me out when a woman can get pregnant and not at high risk, but still chooses to use a surrogate. Especially when they're doing it for vanity reasons, it just seems very exploitative."

While a second penned: "Surrogacy has a place for sure (pls hear that again!) but a lot of the time it feels really elitist and unethical to me. I’m not sure exactly how to say it but it just feels really dystopian and like… only accessible for the wealthiest people."

And a third quipped: "There is just something so f****d up about rich people (because it really is only available to them) being able to rent the bodies of middle to lower class people."

Now, all of these claims are wildly assumptive and as another commenter pointed out, we don't know Meghan's medical history or reasons for choosing surrogacy, nor does she owe it to the world or anyone to tell them.

Someone else rightly hit back with: "To quote the post shown above, 'We had endless conversations with our doctors in this journey and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family'.

"That's pretty cut and dry. And more than I think anyone should even feel the need to share with the public about their own personal choices concerning the health and safety of their family. But the fact that she did share that is pretty cool of her."

And on top of this, one social media user even absurdly went as far to ask why she's crying - yes, really.

Defending Meghan, a fan explained: "Skin to skin contact, most hospitals have the husbands do it too now. It’s regulating for the baby, helps them with their breathing and heart rate and it makes oxytocin in your body to bond you to the baby. When you do it, it makes it feel like your heart is trying to pull out of your chest, it’s very intense."

Another argued: "Maybe she’s crying because she’s just met her child for the first time genius."

Somebody else commented: "People who ask why she’s naked and why she’s crying should go back to elementary school!"
