Meghan Trainor explains why she used surrogate for third child following backlash

The 'Dear Future Husband' singer and her Sky Kids star husband welcomed their third child together on Sunday (18 January)

Meghan Trainor has opened up on her decision to use a surrogate to welcome her third child, following unfair backlash online.

For those who missed it, on Wednesday (21 January) the 'Made You Look' singer, 32, announced that she, husband Daryl Sabara, 33, and their two sons, Riley, four, and two-year-old Barry, have become a family-of-five.

Meghan took to Instagram to share the happy news that their third child, a daughter called Mikey Moon, had arrived via surrgoate on Sunday (18 January).

She shared a sweet carousel of photos of her little boys meeting their newborn sister for the first time, as well as an emotional picture of Meghan holding little Mikey just after she was born.

In the caption, the singer thanked the family's 'incredible, superwoman surrogate' and explained that they had 'endless conversations with doctors' and surrogacy was 'the safest way' for them to continue growing their family.

However, what was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of Meghan's life was quickly soured by an outpouring of cruel and negative comments.

People seemed to bizarrely take serious issue with the pop star using a surrogate for her daughter's birth and have flooded social media with the debate – the same one that cropped up when Emily In Paris actress Lily Collins also welcomed her daughter via surrogacy last February.

The argument that people are taking is that they feel surrogacy is 'elitist' and 'exploitative,' aka only available to celebrities.

But, without knowing any of the details, including Meghan's medical history or reasonings – not that she owes it to anyone to tell them – the keyboard warriors have ran to attack the mother-of-three.

Internet trolls cruelly wrote: "Via surrogate and she’s all worked up like she did it herself?" and "Honestly, it kinda grosses me out when a woman can get pregnant and not at high risk, but still chooses to use a surrogate. Especially when they're doing it for vanity reasons, it just seems very exploitative."

Someone else swooped in to defend the star, writing: "These comments are deeply ableist and honestly disturbing. I don’t know Meghan personally or her reasons for choosing surrogacy – and that’s exactly the point. Vilifying a woman for choosing surrogacy, without knowing her circumstances, is irrational and cruel."

And now, as we say, Meghan herself has spoken out about why she used a surrogate, explaining it wasn't the family's 'first choice'.

Speaking to PEOPLE Magazine, the singer said: "It wasn’t our first choice, but we had endless conversations with our doctors on this journey, and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family. We are forever grateful for that option."

She urged: "I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family. It’s not something to whisper about or judge. It’s rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork.

"Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid."

Meghan said she had 'an incredible' experience working with the surrogate, whom the family are choosing not to identify.

"Our surrogate is one of the most selfless, strong and loving people I’ve ever met. We felt so connected throughout the entire journey, and I’ll always be grateful for the care and love she showed our daughter," she continued.

The singer gushed: "She gave us the greatest gift of our lives. She graciously answered our many check-in texts to make sure she was doing okay."
