It's always saddening to hear when one of your favourite Hollywood stars has passed away.
And it can be even more emotional when such an A-lister dies during the production of a movie they're working on – whether that's actually on set or just around the time of filming before the project was finished.
Over the decades, a fair few actors have sadly met this fate, with many of their fans, still to this day, mourning their legacy and offering tributes to them on every anniversary of their death.
While some of these celebrities died due to poor health and safety regulations on set, others died following freak accidents, personal struggles, or illness.

Some stories are more widely-known than others, and the new generation may not know all too well about the instances of such tragedies that took place decades before they were even born.
So, without further ado, let's get into the extremely morbid list of some of the most famous Hollywood stars who died while filming.

Vic Morrow – Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)

Advert
Vic Morrow was 53 when he was killed during a night shoot in California in 1982. A helicopter lost control after being hit by pyrotechnic explosions, crashed, and decapitated Morrow, killing him along with two child actors, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen.
The incident triggered a high-profile criminal investigation and major changes to on-set safety rules, especially around stunts and child actors.
Brandon Lee – The Crow (1994)

Brandon Lee was 28 when he was fatally shot on set in North Carolina in March 1993.
A prop gun had a live round fragment lodged in the barrel from an earlier scene. When a blank was fired, it propelled the fragment into his abdomen and he tragically died six hours later in hospital.
The film was completed using body doubles, rewrites, and early digital effects.
Heath Ledger – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

Advert
Heath Ledger died aged 28 in New York while the film was mid-production in 2008.
The cause was accidental overdose from prescription medications, including painkillers and sleeping pills.
Rather than recast, the role was restructured so Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell each played versions of his character.
Paul Walker – Furious 7 (2015)

Advert
Paul Walker was 40 when he died in a high-speed car crash in Santa Clarita, California, in November 2013.
He was a passenger in a Porsche Carrera GT that lost control and hit a tree leading to production getting shut down for months.
His brothers, Caleb and Cody, acted as stand-ins, with visual effects used to complete remaining scenes. The script was rewritten so his character could retire rather than die.
Philip Seymour Hoffman – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015)

Philip Seymour Hoffman was 46 when he died in his New York apartment from an accidental heroin overdose, with other drugs in his system, in February 2014.
He had completed most, but not all, of his scenes.
The script was adjusted and digital compositing was used sparingly to finish the film.
Oliver Reed – Gladiator (2000)

Oliver Reed died aged 61 in Malta in May 1999 after collapsing in a bar during a break from filming, with the cause of death officially listed as a heart attack.
He still had key scenes left to shoot, so body doubles and early CGI were used to complete his character’s arc.
Natalie Wood – Brainstorm (1983)

Natalie Wood was 43 when she drowned off Catalina Island during a weekend break from filming in November 1981.
Production was almost finished when she fell from a boat and was found in the water hours later.
Stand-ins, careful framing, and dialogue reworking were used to complete her remaining scenes.
River Phoenix – The Dark Blood (2012)

River Phoenix was 23 when he collapsed outside the Viper Room in Los Angeles and died from acute drug intoxication in October 1993.
The film was left unfinished and shelved for years, but it was finally completed and released in 2012 with an ending that acknowledged the missing footage.
Richard Harris – Harry Potter series (2002)

Richard Harris was 72 when he died from complications of Hodgkin’s disease after completing his work as Dumbledore in the first two films while seriously ill.
The role was then recast with Michael Gambon from Prisoner of Azkaban onwards.
