Spoilers ahead for The Big Bang Theory finale

Fans of The Big Bang Theory noticed a surprise nod to season one in the very last scene of the finale that's set to air in the UK tonight.

An eagle-eyed Reddit user spotted Penny, played by Kaley Cuoco, wearing the exact blue t-shirt she had on in the debut episode of the show back in 2007.

Some fans have suggested the top is a mark of a significant life event happening for Penny.

In the closing scenes of series 12, episode 24 ('The Change Constant/The Stockholm Syndrome'), she is sat surrounded by her co-stars eating a takeaway after revealing she and Sheldon are going to have a baby.

In the opening episode of series one, Penny is wearing the same floral top when she meets Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) for the first time.

"She also wore that shirt when Leonard asks Penny out again after the break up and after Priya. And they were unpacking Bernadette's wedding gifts, just like Penny was unpacking her move," pointed out another fan on Reddit.

Other fans noted Sheldon's Flash-themed T-shirt and Howard's belt are the same ones they wore in that first episode, too.

Penny's baby announcement in the final episode - the last of 279 - split fans since she had always insisted she didn't want children.

Producer Steve Holland defended the plot twist. "Leonard and Penny had been talking about having children - and the decision not to - this season," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Their relationship was really the jumping off point of this whole show and it felt important for us to honour that relationship. I love them together and I wanted to know that they were ending in a happy place."

The hour-long special was watched by 18 million people - the highest in three and a half years.
