The hit Netflix sci-fi show The Umbrella Academy will address actor Elliot Page's transition, with the character played by Elliot also transitioning to male.
The news was announced by Elliot himself via a tweet showing a still of the character, now renamed Victor, sat at a bar.
"Meet Viktor Hargreeves" read the caption alongside a purple umbrella emoji.
The official Umbrella Academy twitter replied to the post with: "WE LOVE YOU VIKTOR"
Netflix's LGBT page @Most shared the Elliot's tweet with the caption: "FEELS SO GOOD TO SAY THIS: Elliot Page stars as Viktor Hargreeves in Umbrella Academy S3!!!"
The main Netflix account also joined in with the love posting: "Welcome to the family, Viktor — we’re so happy you’re here"
In a statement to The A.V. Club Netflix confirmed this move saying that the character played by Elliot "will come out as transgender in season 3 and be henceforth known as Viktor Hargreeves."
The streaming giant has yet to share any more details about how Viktor's transition will be written into the show.
Fan reaction to the move has been overwhelmingly positive.
One fan shared the tweet adding: "this has just made my whole day better"
Another wrote: "This makes me so happy I legit cried. Representation is so important."
Some were quick to address concerns as to how this will fit into the show's storyline, arguing: "this show has a talking chimpanzee, time travel and an old man in a kid’s body. a reckon they can handle it."
In agreement another fan wrote: "The story line involves super powers, destroying the moon, a robot mother, time travel, starting a cult, a mannequin as a soulmate, a talking chimpanzee, & a 60 year old trapped in a teenager’s body. It’ll work out, I promise."
Elliot publicly came out as transgender in December 2020, sharing the news with fans via social media, where he also revealed he would now go by Elliot.
Three months later, Elliot became the first openly trans man to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, where he gave an interview explaining his decision:
"I felt like a boy. I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday," he said. "I became a professional actor at the age of 10. Of course I had to look a certain way."
"I just never recognised myself. For a long time I could not even look at a photo of myself... " The star continued.
"I didn't know how to explain to people that even though I was an actor, just putting on a T-shirt cut for a woman would make me so unwell."
