A new Harry Potter special will be coming to the small screen very soon, and we couldn't be more excited.

Star of the series Emma Watson announced the news to her 61.5 million followers on Instagram, posting the trailer as soon as it dropped.

The event will see the cast reuniting at the place where it all started - Hogwarts. It looks set to be an emotional one!

"Had to break out the time-turner one last time for this..." the actress said, while revealing the clip to her fans.

This is the first time members of the cast will be reuniting at Hogwarts since the 2011 conclusion of the film series, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part Two.

The 20th anniversary special is exclusive to HBO Max, and will be available to stream from New Year's Day.

Despite the exciting news, fans shouldn't expect a classic run-around adventure from the cast. The original trio - Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) will all be sitting down with filmmaker Chris Columbus to reminisce about the films and explain everything that went on behind the scenes.

The first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was released almost exactly 20 years ago (16th November 2001).

Other beloved members of the cast have been promoting the trailer, with Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton Tweeting, "is this what school homecoming is like?"

It's safe to say Potterheads were absolutely beside themselves when the news was announced, with many expressing their love for the series in Emma Watson's Instagram comments.

"WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE [sic]" one user said.

"This is gonna be the highlight of the year for ALL potterheads [sic]" exclaimed another.

"SCREAMING SHAKING CRYING" said a third.

Despite the levity, some were noticing a poignant gap in the returning cast.

"I can't imagine Harry Potter and the other actors without Alan Rickman", one fan said. "We miss him".
