Gossip Girl fans screaming as original cast teased to return

A mysterious post got tongues wagging, leaving many speculating that the old crew could be making a glittering return

Gossip Girl fans are screaming after a mysterious post appeared to tease the original cast’s return – although some believe it doesn’t mean what many people think it does.

The original show first premiered in 2007 and ran for six scandalous seasons before concluding in 2012.

Starring the likes of Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick and Taylor Momsen, it followed the exploits of a group of wealthy teens living it up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

From the second we saw ‘It Girl’ Serena (and her cute little neckerchief!) arrive at Grand Central Station, we knew we were not only in for a dramatic ride, but also a very well-dressed one – meaning when things came to an end five years later, many of us felt the void.

A sequel series later followed, also titled Gossip Girl, but after a mixed reaction the show was cancelled after just two seasons.

However, it seems a return to its former glory MAY be on the cards, following a mysterious tweet from the official Gossip Girl Twitter account.

“Welcome back, Upper East Siders,” it said.

“After a long time away, I see it didn’t take much time for you to dirty up the clean slates I gave you.”

The post was accompanied by a picture of the original cast members Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick and Taylor Momsen – though no Michelle Trachtenberg, aka Georgina Sparks, who was the only one to pop up in the sequel.

Naturally, this got tongues wagging, leaving many speculating that the old crew could be making a glittering return.

One commented: “Pls come back! I need this endgame.”

The official Gossip Girl Twitter account teased that SOMETHING was coming.

Another said: “ARE YOU COMING BACK OMG.”

A third wrote: “I would die for a more ‘adult’ Gossip Girl with the adult original cast. Marriage. Kids. Inheritance. Everything. 15/10.”

Some, however, feared that the news might not be quite what people assumed.

“If you follow up with a post that we can stream the original series ‘when HBO Max becomes Max on May 23’, we will never forgive you,” one warned.

But it’s not completely far-fetched.

In a 2017 interview with Variety, Lively spoke about the idea of reprising the role of Serena van der Woodsen, and basically... it wasn’t a no.

She said: “It sort of all depends. Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never.

“I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows — if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”

Either way, it looks like that’s one secret they’ll never tell. Well, not yet, anyway.

XOXO, Gossip Girl.
