Viewers 'in bits' over 'harrowingly brilliant' new drama that's left people in tears

People are calling the series the most 'emotionally draining' thing they've ever watched

We've been far from short of some pretty incredible series over the last few weeks.

From the 'absolutely horrifying' thriller, The Red King, to the latest instalment of BBC's The Responder - it's clear we've been treated to a whole bunch of incredible viewing material.

And the latest 'harrowingly brilliant' new drama has since left viewers 'in bits'.

The six-episode series, which is on Sky Originals, is based on the international bestselling novel by Heather Morris, inspired by the astounding real-life story of Holocaust prisoners, Lale and Gita Sokolov.

The story follows Lale who, in 1942, was deported to Auschwitz, the concentration camp where over a million Jewish people were murdered during the Holocaust.

Shortly after arriving at the concentration camp, Lale was hired as one of the Tätowierers (tattooists) and was ordered to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners' arms.

Then, one day, he met Gita when tattooing her prisoner number on her arm, 'leading to a love that defies the horrors around them'.

Jonah Hauer-King and Anna Próchniak star as the leads alongside Harvey Keitel, who plays Lale in the modern-day, Jonas Nay who plays a Nazi SS guard and Melanie Lynskey, who plays Heather - the woman entrusted with writing Lale's story.

Unless you hadn't already guessed, the series is The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Check out the official trailer here:

Viewers have since taken to social media to share their praise for the limited series, with one X user writing: "The Tattooist of Auschwitz - possibly the most powerful and emotionally draining thing I’ve watched.

"The very worst and the very best of humankind portrayed so vividly."

A second penned: "Watched Tattooist of Auschwitz on Sky Atlantic & was in bits. Brutal, poignant & compelling drama. Synchronicity have made yet another wonderful unique adaptation of a book.

"Must watch drama based on true events."

"The Tattooist of Auschwitz on Sky Atlantic is harrowingly brilliant, as is Harvey Keitel," added a third while a fourth urged: "If you can handle it mentally, I just binged The Tattooist of Auschwitz on Peacock and it was very good."

Another echoed: "Wow! The Tattooist of Auschwitz on @peacock! That there could be such light in a very dark place.

"Simply floored by the expert way these filmmakers told this love story (that really occurred) and managed not to romanticise the concentration camp experience."

And a final Twitter user added: "Watching The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

"Torn between howling, impotent rage and tears."

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is available to watch on Sky.
