Men can experience six different types of orgasms, despite many people only being aware of one.
The male orgasm is often treated as fairly straightforward, with many assuming climax and ejaculation are essentially the same thing.
However, like a survey explaining the ‘orgasm gap’, experts have explained that what is the mainstream way of thinking may not always be the case, with some types of orgasm not involving ejaculation at all.
The subject has made the case for fresh discussion after psychosexual therapist and nurse specialist Lorraine Grover explained that a better understanding of male pleasure can help take pressure off during sex.

Talking to Metro, she said: "Understanding the different types of orgasm can help reduce pressure and improve pleasure."
Grover also explained that people should not see the topic as something to compare themselves against.

She added: "Some men are more physically or emotionally tuned in, while others may need time, support, or better health foundations…The key is curiosity, not comparison."
The most commonly known type is ejaculation, where semen is released from the penis during orgasm.
Pharmacist Abbas Kanani explained: "It’s the release of semen from the penis during orgasm, which is usually achieved through physical or physiological sexual arousal."
Grover said this type usually feels like a short, rhythmic release of tension, with contractions in the pelvic muscles.
However, she noted that ejaculation is not guaranteed every time a man reaches orgasm.
She said: "It still depends on healthy erections and arousal. If orgasm feels weak or hard to reach, it’s often a sign to look at the foundations — blood flow, confidence, and timing."
Another type is a pelvic orgasm, which is linked to the pelvic floor muscles rather than direct stimulation alone.
Grover explained: "This orgasm feels like internal pulsations radiating through the lower body."
Kanani said pelvic floor exercises may help men strengthen those muscles, adding: "By doing this, men can also control ejaculation maintain an erection and enhance their orgasm."
A prostate orgasm is another type, caused by stimulation of the prostate gland.
Grover said: "This orgasm is achieved by the stimulation of the prostate gland through anal, but it can also be achieved by stimulating the perineum – the external area between your genitals and rectum."
She continued: "This orgasm feels like a slow build to a powerful, full-body release."

Men can also experience dry orgasms, where the sensation of orgasm happens without ejaculation.
Blended orgasms combine penile and prostate stimulation, while multiple orgasms can also happen for some men.
Grover said: "These aren’t common, but they are real. It takes awareness, confidence, and physical control. Let go of goal-oriented sex — when you focus on sensation over outcome, your body often surprises you."
