A couple had to take a DNA test to make sure they weren't related after finding out two years into their relationship that their mums had dated the same guy.

Canadian couple and TikTokers Carley Gonschior and Mercedes Stewart have long shown off their adoration for each other in videos on their joint account, sharing videos of them hanging out and offering insights into their lives.

They racked up thousands of followers on the platform with their videos, but suddenly dropped a bombshell earlier this year when they posted a video with the caption: "When you find out two years into dating that your moms both slept with the same guy."

Both Carley and Mercedes grew up without dads, so when they learned their mums had shared a man they realised there was a very real possibility that they could have been related.

Obviously, that's not the kind of realisation you want to have two years into dating.

The TikTokers shared the clip along with the caption: "Should we take a DNA test?", and naturally viewers flooded them with encouragements, desperate to see where the saga would end up.

The couple posted updates of them taking the test and awaiting the results, and towards the end of July they finally received the emails which could change their relationship entirely.

"Carley and I both got an email this morning from 23&Me stating out results are in. We haven't opened them yet, we did say we were going to open them on camera for the first time, so that's what we're going to do," Mercedes told their followers.

The couple opened up the results, and after taking a look they revealed the news to viewers.

"No relatives found. Zero. Zero!"

The couple hugged over the good news that they were not related, and fans quickly responded to share their own relief at the results.

"YAYYYYY IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU BOTH!! I bet that this is just a massive weight off your shoulders," one viewer wrote, while another commented: "Great news, enjoy your lives and keep loving each other."

After confirming they could continue their romance without any fears, Mercedes and Carley went on to keep entertaining their followers with their relationship.

They recently introduced their 'son', a black puppy named Jacks after the bar where they met, and are now looking forward to spending Christmas together as a family who are definitely not linked by blood.
