Melania Trump has come under fire for her outfit choice at the lavish state banquet last night (Wednesday 27 September).

The First Lady and President Donald Trump were welcomed as guests of honour for the white tie event, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Also in attendance were Prince William and Kate Middleton, who were the first to welcome Trump and Melania off their helicopter when they arrived at the grounds yesterday.

The banquet brought to a close the second day of the American couple's controversial UK state visit, which has prompted protests up and down the country.

However, the backlash doesn't seem to have deterred Trump, who appeared to be having a great time during his short trip overseas, despite being accused of breaking royal protocol on numerous occasions.

And now, Melania is the one in the spotlight, facing some pretty harsh comments about her evening attire.

For the state banquet, the First Lady opted for a floor-length yellow gown, featuring an off-the-shoulder design with a pink belt in the middle, complete with a side slit.

But some royal fans were less than impressed with this choice, branding it as not appropriate for such a regal event, while others think it even broke protocol.

The royal family's official Instagram account shared a picture of the King and Queen alongside the US president and First Lady.

In the comments, one fan quipped: "The belt is just….nuh-uh. I may be mistaken but isn’t it inappropriate protocol to wear off the shoulder to such a function?"

While a second added: "What in the world is Melania wearing…."

And a third chimed in with: "That yellow dress on anyone .. could not be more inappropriate. It’s a state dinner not a night club. So embarrassing…"

"Off shoulder at a state dinner??? WTF? Didn't they get a briefing???" questioned another shocked social media user.

While others agreed: "Off the shoulder what is she thinking" and "I’m no royalist but how can anyone think that a yellow strapless dress an appropriate way to dress for the King?"

But, not everyone was in agreement and some people were actually loving Melania's bold fashion choice, with one writing: "Love first lady Melanie Trump dress."

A second agreed: "Everyone looks just stunning."

While others added: "I like the colours ladies chose" and "She looks stand out amazing as always."

Elsewhere during the banquet, the Princess of Wales was hailed as 'so radiant and so healthy and so beautiful' by Trump as she glittered in gold at the banquet.

Kate was wearing a gown by British designer Phillipa Lepley along with a full-length, champagne gold hand-embroidered Chantilly lace evening coat featuring a regal-looking high collar over a silk crepe gown.

Her earrings belonged to the late Queen and the princess opted for her go-to tiara the Lover’s Knot Tiara and wore her hair down and styled in waves.

The princess was sat next to the American leader at the banquet table and was seen smiling up at him as he delivered his speech.

Trump also praised the Prince of Wales, saying: “His Majesty has also raised a remarkable son in His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Really amazing.

“We’ve gotten to know you and I think you’re going to have an unbelievable success in future.”

He added: “Melania and I are delighted to visit again with Prince William and to see Her Royal Highness, Princess Catherine, so radiant and so healthy, and so beautiful. It’s really a great honour, thank you.”
