Earlier this week on Tuesday (4 November), Zohran Mamdani was elected the new mayor of New York City, to the delight of many inhabitants of the Big Apple, with the city erupting into a chorus of cheer when the results were revealed.

Mamdani, who is set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations, cinched the win against former Democrat governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He secured the victory with more than 50 per cent of the vote, while Cuomo, 67, finished second with just over 40 per cent, and 71-year-old Sliwa received just over seven per cent, as reported by The Guardian.

His victory has made history, given that the politician is now NYC's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa.

But there's another trait of Mamdani's that's made history, too.

Namely, that he's a millennial - something which has never before been seen in a New York City mayor.

Now, millennials are those who were born between 1981 and 1996, making their age range approximately 29 to 44 years old as of this year. And, given that Mamdani was born in 1991, he's almost slap-bang in the middle of the bracket threshold.

His age marks a notable difference from the previous mayor's, Eric Adams, born in 1960 (mayor between 2022-2025), Bill de Blasio, born in 1961 (mayor between 2014 – 2021) and Michael Bloomberg, who was born way back in 1942 (mayor between 2002 – 2013).

Mamdani's generation, also known as Generation Y, follows Generation X and precedes Generation Z - which is actually the generation of Mamdani's wife, Rama Duwaji.

Yep, the extremely talented 28-year-old Syrian-American illustrator and animator has now become New York’s first Gen Z First Lady, given that she was born in 1997 - which is the older end of the 1997 to 2012 threshold.

Rushing to social media to share their excitement right before the historical milestone was reached, one X user penned: "If Mamdani wins the election, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in a century, Duwaji too would be positioned to make and shape history. She would be the first member of Gen Z to serve as New York City’s first lady."

"Now, that's exciting!" beamed a second, while a third chimed in: "The new First Lady of NYC, Rama Duwaji, ladies and gentlemen."

"First-ever Gen Z First Lady of NY!" gushed another.

Duwaji married Mamdani in a City Hall ceremony earlier this year in February, but the pair met several years ago on the dating app Hinge.
