Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral elections.
On Tuesday (4 November), it was announced that the 34-year-old state politician, who is set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations, cinched the victory against former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, made history with his win, which made him the Big Apple's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa.
The new mayor was born in Uganda, where he spent his early childhood, but was raised in New York City and became a US citizen in 2018.

After his landslide victory, Mamdani promised in his victory speech to usher in a new age of 'relentless improvement', adding: "Let the words we've spoken together, the dreams we've dreamt together, become the agenda we deliver together.
"New York, this power, it's yours. This city belongs to you. Thank you."

And Mamdani isn't the only one who's made history following his election win, as his wife, Rama Duwaji, a 28-year-old Syrian-American illustrator and animator, has now become New York’s first Gen Z First Lady, given that she was born in 1997 - which is the older end of the 1997 to 2012 threshold.

Rushing to social media to share their excitement over the historical milestone, one X user penned: "If Mamdani wins the election, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in a century, Duwaji too would be positioned to make and shape history. She would be the first member of Gen Z to serve as New York City’s first lady."
"Now, that's exciting!" beamed a second, while a third chimed in: "The new First Lady of NYC, Rama Duwaji, ladies and gentlemen."
"First-ever Gen Z First Lady of NY!" gushed another.
Duwaji married Mamdani in a City Hall ceremony earlier this year, but the pair met several years ago on the dating app Hinge.

"Rama isn't just my wife; she's an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms," Mamdani wrote in a May 12 post on Instagram, announcing they had been married three months earlier.
She earned a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York with her work having been featured by The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Apple, Spotify, VICE, and the Tate Modern in London.
At the time of writing, Duwaji has over 265k followers on Instagram, where she regularly shares her illustrations, many of which focus on pro-Palestinian messages, including depictions of Israeli violence, ethnic cleansing, and US complicity.
