It's official - Zohran Mamdani is the new mayor of New York City - and he has a stark message for Donald Trump.

The 34-year-old Democratic socialist had a historic win today (5 November) after he defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

As well as being NYC's most liberal mayor in generations, he has also made history by becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa.

He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January 1.

The state assembly member from Queens secured victory with more than 50 per cent of the vote, while Cuomo, 67, finished second with just over 40 per cent and Sliwa received just over 7 per cent, as reported by The Guardian.

And the new mayor, who has previously described himself as 'Trump's worst nightmare', didn't mince his words when issuing a warning to the US President.

It's no secret that the two have butted heads and Trump, 79, has publicly made it known on multiple occasions that Mamdani becoming mayor is exactly what he didn't want, as he has even seemingly threatened to withhold funding from the city if he won.

In his victory speech today (5 November), Mamdani told the crowd: "The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this."

“New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change,” he said, vowing to 'wake up each morning with a singular purpose: To make this city better for you than it was the day before'.

Then, turning his attention to Trump head on, Mamdani said: "New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.

"If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.

"This is not only how we stop Trump. It's how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: 'Turn the volume up'."

And it seems that the US President has already responded to the news, writing on his social media platform, Truth Social: "…AND SO IT BEGINS!"

While that's all we've heard from Trump so far on the win, I'm sure there will be plenty more to come as their feud continues.

In his speech, Mamdani also said of his fellow Democratic opponent Cuomo: "I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life but let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many and serves only the few."

According to New York City's Board of Elections, the contest drove the biggest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, with more than two million New Yorkers casting ballots.

Mamdani's policy ideas include creating the city's first universal childcare program, making city buses free and freezing rent for 1 million tenants in the city.

As per CNN, he's also proposed a tax on the city’s wealthiest residents and an increase in the city’s corporate tax rate to pay for his policy ideas.
