White House swaps Barack Obama’s official portrait with bizarre painting of Trump

The surprising portrait choice was hung in the foyer of the State Floor last week on Friday (11 April)

Last week on Friday (11 April), the White House swapped out Barack Obama’s official portrait with a bizarre painting of current United States president, Donald Trump.

Now, the portrait of Obama - who served as the 44th president of the States between 2009 to 2017 - was previously hung up in the foyer of the State Floor, located near the staircase to the president’s residence, after it was unveiled back in 2022.

However, Trump's new portrait has since bumped it from its original spot with it now still on display in the foyer but moved to the opposite wall, where a portrait of 43rd president George W. Bush used to hang.

Given that Trump and 46th president Joe Biden's portraits are not yet complete, the two most recent presidential portraits on display are, as we say, that of Obama and Bush.

On Friday evening, the official X account for the White House announced the change with a short clip of the new portrait alongside the caption: "Some new artwork at the White House," with a pair of emoji eyes.

The painting in question captures a scene of the aftermath of the attempt on the 78-year-old's life during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, back in July.

Trump could be seen with a wounded ear as he thrust his balled-up fist into the sky as he cheered 'fight, fight, fight!'

White House tradition reportedly usually sees that portraits of the two most recent former presidents go on display in the foyer.

Notably, Trump is in quite a unique position of also being a former president as he was previously the 45th president during his first term between 2017 to 2021.

According to AP, there are plans to move Bush's portrait nearer to his father’s, 41st president of the US George H.W. Bush, which is on the staircase to the residence.

The assassination attempt saw Trump targeted by a 20-year-old man, who fired eight rounds from an AR-15-style rifle from the roof of a nearby building.

Thomas Matthew Crooks was subsequently shot and killed by a member of the US Secret Service, after convicted felon Trump endured a wound in his upper right ear.

Crooks' aim also killed one audience member and critically injured two others.

Just weeks later, another incident occurred at Trump's Mar-a-Lago, Florida estate, which saw a man was arrested from the scene, carrying an AK-47-style weapon in his hands.

Reflecting on the two attempts made on his life last year, he told Capitol Rotunda attendees in January: "I was saved by God to make America great again."
