Donald Trump announces ‘Patriot Games’ and everyone is immediately saying the same thing

The US president has raised some eyebrows with his latest announcement

US President Donald Trump has announced the 'Patriot Games', and everyone is immediately saying the exact same thing.

On Thursday (18 December), the 79-year-old Republican announced that the White House would host the competition, which will see young athletes from across the country, as part of the celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary next year.

"In the fall, we will host the first-ever Patriot Games, an unprecedented four-day athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes — one young man and one young woman from each state and territory," Trump said.

Sound familiar?

Well, it's clear that other people on the internet thought the exact same thing, with many rushing in to highlight similarities between the 'Patriot Games' concept and the plot of the Hunger Games.

In case the Young Adult dystopian fiction genre somehow passed you by, the hit film franchise, based on books by Suzanne Collins, revolved around young contestants fighting each other to death, with the only survivor being crowned as the winner as part of a televised reality competition.

Responding to Trump's announcement as part of Freedom 250, 'a national, non-partisan organisation leading the Administration’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday', one X user questioned: "DID HE JUST ANNOUNCE THE HUNGER GAMES?"

"He finna send them to Hunger Games," declared a second while a third chimed in: "Yup, that concept definitely sounds familiar."

A fourth lamented: "I knew we were in late-stage capitalism, but I didn’t realise we were in **HUNGER GAMES** late-stage capitalism."

"MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR," joked a fifth while a sixth chirped: "Exactly what I was thinking..."

Another confessed: "Glad to see so many others thought the same thing."

And a final X user hit out: "What kinda Hunger Games is this?"

Trump previously discussed some of the planned celebrations for America's 250th birthday next year, something which includes none other than bringing the UFC to the White House for a historic event.

"We’re going to have a UFC fight – think of this – on the grounds of the White House," Trump, who is a massive fan of the MMA promotion company and regularly spotted at events alongside close friend and UFC boss Dana White, said.

He added: "We have a lot of land there. We are going to build a little – we are not, Dana is going to do it … We are going to have a UFC fight, championship fight, full fight, like 20-25,000 people, and we are going to do that as part of 250 also."
