As the rules currently stand, a US president cannot serve a third term, however, Donald Trump’s former adviser believes there could be a way to circumvent this.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two elected terms with a maximum of eight years in office, with Trump serving his second and final stint in the White House as things currently stand.
However, the Trump Organisation has been spotted selling red caps which read 'Trump 2028' in an apparent reference to the next US presidential election.

Now, Steve Bannon, who was White House Chief strategist from January to August 2017, believes Trump will win if he is able to find a way to run for a third time.

"There are methods which you could do it. President Trump is going to be eligible, is going to run again, and will win again," Bannon said in the podcast Apocalypse Now? on Thursday (1 May).
"I will tell you, on the afternoon of the 20th January of 2029, he's going be in the White House signing executive orders."

So what has Trump said about all this? Well, he seems pretty open to the idea of winning the next election, somehow.
Speaking to NBC's Kristen Welker on Sunday (30 March), the Republican leader insisted he's 'not joking' about a potential third stint in the role, and he has claimed there are 'methods' of getting around the law.
Bannon also expressed a similar sentiment, telling NewsNation: "We have many different alternatives to make sure President Trump on the afternoon of January 2029 is the President of the United States, many different alternatives.
"And we will roll those out over time."

As per the National Constitution Center, the 22nd Amendment reads: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."
However, ways around this have been suggested by numerous people.
One such theory, which was suggested by Welker, is that current vice president JD Vance could run for President, with Trump being his VP. He would then take back the role of President when Vance retires from office.

However, while Trump has never elaborated on any methods, he has said that achieving a third term is not something he's currently focused on, adding: "I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.
"I’m focused on the current."
