Woman reveals in-laws refuse to call her by name after they claim it’s 'juvenile’

The woman took to Reddit after being left hurt and frustrated by her in-laws

A lot of people hold their name close to their hearts and identity, but what would you do if it was disrespected?

Some people might not see what the big deal is, however, names are often special to us and how we address ourselves.

I’m not going to let someone call me Beth if my name is Britt, am I?

But unfortunately, when you marry into a family, it can be difficult to smooth out persistent disrespect.

This is the conundrum a woman took to Reddit with after being left hurt and frustrated after her in-laws refused to call her by her legal name as they believed it was ‘juvenile’.

Flora penned her frustrations in the Sub, AITA to find out whether her in-laws were justified or not about refusing to use her name.

The woman explained that she likes her name and often goes by the nickname, ‘Florry’.

However, her husband’s parents began calling her ‘Florence’ instead as they hated Flora’s name.

She wrote: “My legal name is Flora. Not Florence. Even at work my co-workers call me Florry. I will answer to either Flora or Florry. But ever since I first met my in-laws two years ago they have been so weird about my name.”

According to the post, her in-laws consistently badgered her about whether her name was actually Florence and couldn’t understand why her parents chose to give her a shortened down name as her legal name.

Flora continued: “It really bothers them that I use Florry and prefer it over Flora. They cannot understand a professional woman using such a juvenile sounding name, and said every time they hear it they expect a six-year-old and not a 28-year-old woman.”

This led to Flora and her husband distancing themselves from his parents over the disagreement about her name.

Flora explained that her in-laws asked hundreds of times if her name was Florence.

She said: “Whenever we see them at family functions they call me Florence. The first time I really hoped they were talking to someone else. But no, it was me.

“My husband told me to ignore them if I wanted and so I did. My husband's siblings all think their parents are being ridiculous and all of them call me Florry in an effort to p*ss their parents off.”

But it wasn’t until New Years that it all blew up: “They and their friends all called me childish, among other things, for refusing to answer to Florence. My husband got so annoyed he went over to tell them they were being ridiculous when Florence isn't even my name.

“They told him Florence could be seen as just another nickname and I am being unreasonable and rude.

“I felt very called out but honestly the anger and way they talked about me made me question if I am being unreasonable and if I shouldn't just let them call me Florence.”

Thankfully, the Reddit commenters just weren’t having it.

One person suggested: “Every time they say 'Florence' correct them and act concerned for their 'mental decline'.”

Another wrote: “It's not your name, and their obsession with it is absolutely absurd. I would just not see them at all, ever again. If they can't even do you the slightest level of respect as using your actual name, then they are worthless people.”

No other updates were given on the thread but let’s hope Flora is in a better position now.
