Baby name that hasn’t been popular since 1934 reaches top 100 once more

It seems there's been a revival of vintage names for baby girls

Each year, baby name trends offer a fascinating glimpse into how tastes are shifting, blending modern influences with a growing love for vintage charm – and 2025’s rankings are no exception.

While the likes of Sophia, Emma, Charlotte and Isabella continue to shuffle places within the top 10 for girls, parents have established a quiet revival for names many assumed were long retired.

In fact, this year’s list is packed with comebacks. Names like Sarah have re-entered the top 100 after a brief absence, while Josephine has made a historic return after falling out of favour all the way back in the 1940s.

Elsewhere, Eloise has climbed more than 20 places to make her first-ever appearance in the top 100, and nature-inspired picks like Juniper and Oaklynn are also having their moment.

But it’s one particular name sitting right at the bottom of the top 100 that’s really turning heads. This name hasn’t appeared in the charts since 1934; that’s nearly a century of absence.

And yet, in 2025, it’s officially back.

The baby name making this remarkable comeback is Vivian.

Last seen in the top 100 in 1934, Vivian has re-entered the rankings at number 99, proving that vintage really is back in fashion. Once associated with screen sirens and sharp elegance, the name has clearly found a new generation of fans who appreciate its refined, yet, wearable feel.

This resurgence is part of a wider trend; according to Colleen Slagen, author of the book Naming Bebe, old-timey names are making a comeback.

“I think vintage names evoke a sense of nostalgia. I get a lot of clients who pull out their family tree, looking to grandparents and great-grandparents for name inspiration,” Slagen told Yahoo! Life.

However, another expert, baby-name consultant Taylor A. Humphrey, did point out that 'as with fashion, baby names follow emotional and aesthetic cycles — and as collective tastes shift, so do our naming desires'.

So, if you want to change your list of baby names because they're not trendy enough, just wait a few years, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

For the 2025 boys’ list, changes were more subtle, with the top five remaining exactly the same. But even there, nostalgia crept in, with Arthur rejoining the top 100 for the first time since 1970.
