‘Horrifyingly disturbing’ film so graphic that people couldn’t finish it is now available to watch at home

Several people reportedly walked out of cinema screenings as they couldn't stomach it

Back in late September, cinephiles were treated to a 'horrifyingly disturbing' film which was so incredibly graphic and grotesque that they couldn't stand to finish it.

The MUBI horror, which has an impressive near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, boasts a star-studded cast featuring the likes of Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid and clearly shocked the world when it first hit the big screen.

However, two months later, curious viewers can now watch all two hours and 20 minutes of The Substance from the comfort of your own home. Check out the official trailer here:

Now, the film in question - complete with a heavy dose of blood, flesh and spandex - follows Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore) who was once thriving in La La Land hosting her own aerobics show before being sacked on her 50th birthday only to be replaced by someone 'younger and better' than her.

Clearly in distress at the whole ordeal, Elisabeth happens upon a mysterious laboratory that offers her a substance which promises to transform her into the 'more perfect' version of herself named Sue - played by Qualley.

Without giving away too many deets about the extremely gory ins and outs of the transformation process, the heartbreaking plot nor the batsh*t insane end scene - but what I can tell you is that audiences were not prepared for what they saw up on the silver screen one bit.

Yep, in one London screening, LBC reports, as many as 20 people reportedly walked out.

And while, no doubt, the stomach-churning sound effects plus the cocktail of 36,000 gallons of fake blood mixed with a seemingly relentless amount of prosthetic boobs were shocking on the silver screen - it's impacts have not been lost for viewers back home.

The film is now available to rent on Amazon Prime, or stream for free for MUBI subscribers.

Taking to social media to gush about the body horror, one X user said: "The Substance on Amazon Prime is such a good movie omggg."

"The last 20 minutes of The Substance was absolutely insane," reviewed a third while a fourth exclaimed: "IT CHANGED MY LIFE!"

Another quipped: "Watched The Substance. One of the most horrifyingly disturbing and disgusting movie experiences I've had in my whole life. I don't know how I can return as a functional member of society after this."

Clearly hopping on the hype train, even Katy Perry declared: "The Substance - best film this year."
