Paul Rudd has revealed he's a huge fan of a popular British show - but he doesn't think it would work so well across the pond.

The 56-year-old Clueless star admitted the TV show in question is the 'first thing he watches' every time he touches down in the UK, making it no secret he's pretty much a super-fan.

Speaking to Joe in March last year, he said: "I don’t think we could do it in our country. People are not clever…quick enough."

Now, it's pretty well known that Brits and Americans have vastly different senses of humour, so this comment doesn't come as a total shock.

British humour is more sarcastic, deadpan and deprecating, whereas Americans prefer one-liners, confidence, and personal humour.

According to Mostly Media, the show that Rudd is a huge fan of drew in an audience of between five and six million at its peak during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Viewership now hovers consistently around the four million mark, which is still huge, not to mention it featuring religiously in Channel 4’s top five programmes.

In case you haven't guessed it yet, we're of course talking about Gogglebox.

For those who aren't familiar, Gogglebox is a British reality TV series that in simple terms, allows us to watch other people watch telly.

Families situated up and down the country watch the nation's favourite shows with a camera in their TV set, so viewers can watch along with them and see their hilarious reactions.

As for Rudd's opinion, his comment came about as he was discussing the differences between life in the UK and the US.

The American actor gushed: "I love Gogglebox. “I love it so much. Whenever I arrive in the UK it’s the first thing I watch. It’s always on and I always watch it.

He added: "I even watched the celebrity version last night."

Before as we say, he laughed and quipped: "I don’t think we could do it in our country. We’re not clever... quick enough."

Understandably, people have had mixed reactions to the brutal comment, taking to social media to share their thoughts.

One Instagram user wrote: "Maybe I need to move to the UK. I love that kind of humour. And when I use those lines in my standup, it’s soooo hit or miss."

While a second added: "Only someone who’s been outside of the US (and inside of UK) plenty of times would say that. And would also be correct."

And a third and fourth penned: "He’s so right, though" and "Honestly, fair comment".

Someone else chimed in with: "Lol right cause watching other people watching TV on TV is such high brow entertainment. Are we sure he's not being ironic?"

And another person argued: "Oh he doesn't realise its literally the lowest, laziest least effort form of content available. If Americans weren't primed for this then reaction YouTubers wouldn't be so huge... Paul wrong basically."

While someone else defiantly quipped: "Americans are infinitely funnier than Brits it's not even close."
