Jennifer Lawrence says she lost out on one role for 'not being pretty enough'

The Hunger Games star opened up about why she didn't land the coveted role in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 smash-hit

Jennifer Lawrence is one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now, starring in blockbuster after blockbuster with no plans to slow down anytime soon.

And while the 35-year-old actress has landed a number of roles in her career, there was reportedly one character she missed out on playing for allegedly 'not being pretty enough'.

The role in question was Sharon State in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 cult-classic, Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, which also starred Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margaret Qualley.

The comedy-western film, which also featured Austin Butler and Dakota Fanning, took home countless gongs in the 2020 awards season, notably winning two Oscars (Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt, Best Production Design) and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The lengthy feature, which had a runtime of two hours and 40 mins, took home a staggering $392.1 million at the box office.

Speaking during a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, Hunger Games star Lawrence responded to the host’s suggestion that Tarantino had been 'chasing' her to work together on the star-studded movie project.

"I don’t know about that," she responded before later revealing: "Well, he did, and then everybody was like, 'She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,' and then they didn’t."

The role of Sharon Tate, a real-life model-actress who was brutally murdered by the Manson Family cult in 1969, aged just 26, was eventually given to Barbie's Margot Robbie.

When Horowitz questioned Lawrence on whether that was true, the Oscar-winning A-lister continued: "I’m pretty sure it is true.

"Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling this story this way for so long that I believe it."

"No, but I — I’m pretty sure that happened — or, he just never was considering me for the part and the internet just, like, went out of their way to call me ugly," she speculated.

Margot ended up being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work as Sharon Tate in the film, one of 10 nods the film received.

Elsewhere in her Happy Sad Confused interview last week, Lawrence also revealed she turned down an appearance in another of Tarantino’s movies, The Hateful Eight.

"I turned it down, which I should not have done," she admitted, referring to the fugitive role of Daisy Domergue played by Jennifer Jason Leigh in the 2015 western-mystery flick.
