Adolescence star Owen Cooper makes history as the first person to break major Emmys record

The 15-year-old breakout star bagged the outstanding supporting actor Emmy for his portrayal of Jamie Miller in Adolescence

Congratulations are in order for Adolescence star Owen Cooper, who made history at the 2025 Emmy Awards last night (Sunday 14 September).

The 15-year-old impressively bagged the outstanding supporting actor Emmy, while the series itself and other cast members dominated the evening, taking home a whopping total of six awards.

The teen played the role of 13-year-old Jamie Miller in the highly acclaimed TV show, which dominated Netflix's most-watched list earlier this year.

The British series, which was released in March of this year, centres on the story of schoolboy Jamie, who was arrested for the murder of a classmate, a girl called Katie.

Inspired by tragic real-life events, once CCTV footage proves Jamie's guilt, the series delves into the heartbreaking questions of how a young boy could have committed such a crime, the effect it had on his family, as well as the impact of social media and toxic masculinity.

Each episode of the four-parter, also starring Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Ashley Waters, was also filmed in a single, uninterrupted, continuous take, making it a gripping viewing experience.

And last night, all of the hard work paid off, as Owen's win of the outstanding supporting actor Emmy made him the youngest male to ever take home the prestigious gong.

Not only that - he is also the youngest Emmy winner ever in any male acting category.

The youngster, who had already made history as the youngest person ever nominated for supporting actor in a limited series, told the audience at the 77th Emmy Awards that he was 'nothing' just three years ago.

In his acceptance speech, Owen told the crowd: “Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn’t expect to be even in the United States, never mind here.

“But I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”

Owen's incredible feat saw him beat Scott Jacoby’s long-held record, after he won an Emmy for That Certain Summer in 1973, aged 16.

And the youngest ever Emmy winner altogether is Roxana Zal, who was 14 when she clinched an award for Something About Amelia in 1984.

As we mentioned earlier, Owen wasn't the only Adolescence actor to take home an award.

Erin Doherty won best supporting actress in a limited series for her portrayal of clinical psychologist Briony Ariston, and she dedicated the award to her older sister.

While Graham picked up the award for lead actor in a limited series, director Philip Barantini took home the Emmy for outstanding directing for a limited or anthology series or movie.

And writers Jack Thorne and Graham also won for outstanding writing in the same category.

“I’m just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby,” Graham said to the audience.

“So, for me to be here today in front of my peers and to be acknowledged by you is the utmost humbling thing I could ever imagine in my life, and it shows you that any dream is possible.”

And finally, Adolescence also took home the award for best limited or anthology series.

Congratulations to the worthy winners!
