Laci was eight months pregnant at the time of her murder with a baby boy who the couple had planned to name Conner.

The 27-year-old seemingly vanished into thin air from her home in California, and her husband first raised the alarm regarding her disappearance.

Laci's remains were later discovered on the shores of San Francisco Bay in 2003.

Peterson pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder at his arraignment, NBC News reports.

He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, with his death sentence being overturned in 2020.

However, many viewers have been rocked to the core by a shocking statistic brought to light in the Netflix documentary.

It is conveyed in the documentary that the leading cause of death of pregnant women in the US is homicide.

In 2022, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health also found these homicides were linked to a 'deadly mix' of intimate partner domestic violence and firearms - adding that restrictive laws around women's reproductive health and guns also contributed to domestic violence committed by the woman's partner.

One person wrote: "I’m watching the Laci Peterson documentary and I just learned that homicide is a leading cause of death for pregnant women in the United States! That’s scary and heartbreaking!"

A second person added: "Just watched the American Murder: Laci Peterson documentary on Netflix, and it’s grim.

A third added: "The #LaciPeterson case always stuck with me. It’s when I discovered the number one cause of death for pregnant women is murder."

Scott recently spoke out for the very first time as part of a forthcoming Peacock documentary that focuses on him, Face to Face with Scott Peterson.

He further maintained his innocence, stating in a prison interview: "If I have a chance to show people what the truth is, and if they are willing to accept it, it would be the biggest thing that I can accomplish right now - because I didn’t kill my family."

Peterson was having an affair in the months leading up to Laci's death, and he called himself 'a total a-hole to be having sex outside their marriage'.

He also added that he regretted not testifying during his trial, saying: "If I have a chance to show people what the truth is, and if they are willing to accept it, it would be the biggest thing I can accomplish right now.”
