Viewers of a new Netflix documentary have been left feeling devastated following the harrowing scenes.

American Murder: Laci Peterson is the latest true crime documentary released by the streaming giant that confronts violence against women.

Laci Peterson was murdered in 2002 by her husband, Scott Lee Peterson, while eight months pregnant.

She was 27 years old.

Laci vanished from the home she shared with Scott in California, and her husband then reported her as missing.

In 2003, her remains were discovered on the shores of San Francisco Bay.

The following year, Scott was found guilty of the first-degree murder of his wife, as well as the second-degree murder of their unborn child.

Scott maintains his innocence despite the overwhelming amount of evidence against him - and the new Netflix documentary goes to great lengths to hold him to account.

It comes to light that Scott was having an affair at the time of the murder.

Scott is now serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, a lesser punishment compared to his initial death sentence which was overturned in 2020.

Viewers of American Murder: Laci Peterson have been taking to social media to share the same thought after learning about the case.

Many people have been left asking themselves why men such as Scott end up murdering their wives while cheating - rather than getting a divorce.

It's an all too common occurrence which highlights the true extent of violence against women.

One person wrote on X: "Watching the new Laci Peterson documentary and I will never ever ever be able to wrap my head around these men thinking murder is a better solution than divorce…….."

Another said: "Something I’ll never understand is why men choose to kill their wives when they’re having an affair. It’s a common pattern in many true crime cases I watch.

"Wouldn’t it just make more sense to leave? They act as if it will just get rid of the problem and it won’t."

A third added: "#LaciPeterson case is so heartbreaking. Especially when the mum asks why did he have to kill her.

"He could have left her. He could have left her and been with someone else. And it's so true because why is violence always their first instinct. Being a woman is such a curse."

Scott has recently spoken out for the first time in decades in a forthcoming Peacock documentary, Face to Face with Scott Peterson.

He still maintains his innocence.

He said: “If I have a chance to show people what the truth is, and if they are willing to accept it, it would be the biggest thing that I can accomplish right now – because I didn’t kill my family."
