Kelly Rowland's erotic Netflix thriller brutally slammed as 'one of worst movies ever made'

Kelly Rowland's erotic Netflix thriller brutally slammed as 'one of worst movies ever made'

The Destiny's Child singer's latest project has been ripped by fans and critics alike

Kelly Rowland is starring in a new Tyler Perry film, but viewers are advising others to ‘save their time’ and skip this ‘wild’ Netflix movie.

43-year-old Kelly achieved her first acting credit in 1999 when she starred as ‘Girl #2’ in Tyler Maddox’s Beverly Hood.

Since then, she’s starred as Leah Walker in six episodes of Empire, appeared as Sandra in Hulu’s Bad Hair and as Edie in Grown-ish.

But it’s her latest role in Perry’s new Netflix movie that has people talking.

Kelly Rowland stars in a new steamy legal thriller.

In February last year, it was reported that the Destiny’s Child singer had signed on to produce and star in a crime thriller alongside Sean Sagar and RonReaco.

Tyler was announced to be on directorial duties and the film eventually had its premiere at the Paris Theatre in New York City on 15 February.

If your interest is piqued, then get a load of the official trailer for Netflix’s latest offering, Mea Culpa:

The new legal thriller dropped on the streaming platform on February 23 and sees lawyer Mea Harper (played by Kelly) going through a rocky period with her husband, Kal Hawthorne (Sean Sagar).

To keep herself busy, Mea takes on a client known as Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes) - an artist who is accused of murdering his girlfriend and is being prosecuted by Ray Hawthorne, (Nick Sagar) Kal’s brother.

As Mea and Zyair begin to work on his case, the pair become closer and the lawyer is faced with a decision.

Will she put her family and her duty to her profession first? Or, will she give in to her darkest desires?

Fans are divided on Tyler Perry's latest offering.

Unfortunately, the steamy legal drama has drawn criticism from streaming subscribers, with many taking to social media to have their say.

One X user typed: “‘Mea Culpa’ (2024) Netflix - Kelly, you trying to text through an Excel spreadsheet made more sense than this. 1/5.”

Mea Culpa on Netflix is such a wild movie,” claimed a second.

Another user commented: “Watching this Netflix Movie - not sure why I am still watching. It’s one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Save your time. It’s called Mea Culpa. Just trash.”

A fourth commented: “Hello am sorry but ‘Mea Culpa’ should be from Tyler Perry for making such a movie. He should just stick to Madea PLEASE! It was worst (sic) than a Netflix original! I lost 2 hours of my life! Oh Come on.”

Mea Culpa is available to stream on Netflix now.

Not everyone agreed with the criticism though, with one Netflix subscriber writing: “Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa is a must on Netflix! St had me f*ed up at the end.”

"If you haven’t watched Mea Culpa on Netflix, do it,” urged another. "It’s so good & Kelly Rowland is in it!!”

At the time of writing, Mea Culpa has an average star rating of 1.9 on Letterboxd and a score of 27 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.
