It's clear Adrien Brody's night at the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday (2 March) was nothing short of eventful - from start to finish.

The 51-year-old The Brutalist star had a number of stand-out moments during the Oscars, including a surprise kiss with Halle Berry in front of his girlfriend Georgina Chapman, an awkward chewing gum blunder and taking home the gong for Best Actor - something he last did when he was just 29 for his role in The Pianist.

His acceptance speech for the award, however, seemingly hasn't gone down all too well with viewers at home, with many branding it as 'disrespectful'.

Brody kicked off his speech by thanking the team who made The Brutalist the success story it turned out to be.

Then, after thanking his girlfriend Chapman and her children, whom she shares with ex-partner Harvey Weinstein, for their support, producers of the star-studded soirée began playing the melody that indicates to award winners that it's time to start wrapping up their speeches.

It was then that Brody issued a damning statement about the move, demanding that the music be stopped before declaring: "I will wrap this up, please turn the music off."

He went on to explain it wasn't his 'first rodeo', adding 'I've done this before' - seemingly referencing his first Best Actor award he won back in 2003 for his role in Roman Polanski's war-drama.

Brody continued: "I have to thank my mum and dad, who are here as well. They've just created such a strong foundation of respect and kindness and a wonderful spirit and they've given me the strength to pursue this dream."

Sharing their reactions to Brody refusing to be cut off, one social media user quipped: "Adrien Brody taking 1 whole minute to get on the stage, throwing his gum on the floor, and proceeding to have a 6.5 minute speech where he demands the orchestra to stop playing so he can keep yapping."

A second piped up: "Adrien Brody's speech went crazy damn."

"Hmm so I do not like how Adrien Brody was all 'I’ve done this before'," declared a third. "There is a huge difference between this speech and Timothée’s SAG speech and this one was full of arrogance."

Another joked: "Adrien Brody’s acceptance speech was longer than the runtime of The Brutalist."

And a final social media user echoed: "Adrien Brody said 'oh you thought The Brutalist was long? Wait for my Oscars acceptance speech."

Tyla has contacted Adrien Brody’s representatives for comment.
