‘Kardashian curse’ theory sparked again after Jacob Elordi’s latest movie The Dog Stars slammed by critics
If there’s one thing the internet loves, it’s a good conspiracy theory - and the ‘Kardashian curse’ is one that’s been floating around for a while now, with fans convinced that Jacob Elordi is its latest victim.
If you have no idea what we’re talking about, the ‘Kardashian curse’ is essentially a long-running theory which claims that celebrities who become romantically involved with the famous family suffer career setbacks, bad luck, or personal turmoil.
Of course, there is no proof behind this whatsoever, and it’s simply a quite funny superstition that social media has become obsessed with.
Nevertheless, though, the theory has reared its head again on the release date of Elordi’s latest movie, The Dog Stars.

The 29-year-old Australian actor, who is dating Kendall Jenner, is starring in the science fiction thriller film directed by Ridley Scott, which hit cinemas on Friday (28 August).
However, if you haven’t heard much about it, sadly, you wouldn’t be the only one, as others have been left confused by a supposed lack of marketing.
One Reddit user theorised: “Is the Jenner Curse striking Jacob Elordi?
“We're talking about a movie directed by Ridley Scott and led by Hollywood's supposedly hottest ‘it-boy’ Jacob Elordi... and the marketing is a ghost town: no red carpet premieres announced, no press tour, 00 buzz.”
It’s important to note that The Dog Stars did in fact hold a world premiere in London on 20 August, while 20th Century Studios held a series of press screenings, and the cast have been doing interviews. It just might not have been the blockbuster-level of marketing people were expecting.
The social media user went on to question: “Isn't it mind-blowing how Jacob's media presence has been completely swallowed whole since linking up with Kendall?”
“Instead of actor-focused press, all we get are staged paparazzi dog-walks, Bottega outfits, and Kendall posting cryptically aesthetic poetry stories on Ig??
“He went from being hyped as the ‘next big generation actor’ to having his actual career sidelined while he becomes another accessory in the KarJenner universe.”
They summarised: “I think it’s the classic pattern: the Kardashian-Jenner machine absorbs the partner's relevance for their own brand, while the guy's actual craft and box-office appeal take a total nosedive."
The Redditor asked whether this is ‘definitive proof that dating a Jenner vampirizes your Hollywood credibility?’ Ouch.
The movie has also been hit by a string of negative reviews from critics, with, at the time of writing, a 41 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Empire gave the flick a measly two stars, calling it ‘too downbeat’ and claiming that ‘it doesn't seem quite sure what it wants to say ’; The Guardian brutally dubbed it a ‘lethargic misfire’.
However, it’s not all bad, and there are some positive reviews out there too.
The Hollywood Reporter’s review, for example, reads: “Muted but never dull, The Dog Stars seems unlikely to land near the top of anyone’s Ridley Scott rankings. But it’s an appealingly mellow watch, even if that might seem antithetical to a post-apocalyptic drama positioned squarely in the shadow of death.”
While The Times praised Elordi, writing that he ‘shone’ and ‘delivered his most effective performance since Saltburn’.
So, it looks like the so-called ‘Kardashian curse’ hasn’t had an impact just yet…
