Matthew McConaughey has opened up about the sad reason why he went on an eight-year 'hiatus' from his own mum.

Sitting down with People in a new article published last week (24 September), the Dallas Buyers Club actor revealed that he spent almost an entire decade barely speaking to his mother, Mary Kathleen 'Kay' McConaughey, and the reason why.

According to the 55-year-old, he needed to cut things off from Kay because she couldn't respect his privacy.

"We had about an eight-year period where I had to have short conversations with her on our Sunday phone calls because she was sharing a lot of that information," he shared. "I’d tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I’d read about it in the news or see it in the local paper."

McConaughey, who is father to three children; Levi, 17, Vida, 15, and their youngest, 12-year-old Livingston, recalled: "She couldn’t help herself."

Kay referred to this as a 'hiatus', but McConaughey eventually became comfortable enough to no longer care about what she might say about his boundaries.

"About eight years after that, I got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, 'You know what? My mum can say whatever the hell she wants'," he said.

"It’s much more fun now... I’d say we’re closer now."

It's clear that such a statement is true, given that the mother-son duo, along with McConaughey's son, Levi, are starring in the upcoming Apple TV+ film, The Lost Bus, which follows the story of the 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.

McConaughey, who has been married to Camila Alves McConaughey for over a decade after tying the knot back in 2012, also recently revealed to Fox News Digital a major bedroom secret that he says did wonders for his relationship.

Sharing his advice to do away with a king-sized bed and opt for a smaller, more cosy-sized bed frame, the Dazed and Confused A-lister explained: "I wake up one morning … I'm looking over there, and Camila's like a football field away, man.

"Then you go to bed at night, like, you want to snuggle up and … 'Well, we’ve got to cover you up. Come about 12 feet, and I'll come 12 feet'."

McConaughey added: "You're like, man, this damn king-size bed is not good for the marriage, man. Get rid of that son of a b*tch."

He shared that he and his missus finally landed on a queen-size bed instead, where they're now sleeping 'shoulder to shoulder'.

"I'm telling you," he claimed. "It's good for your marriage."
