Netflix viewers question bullet details surrounding Mica’s death in Pastor’s Wife

One aspect of Mica Miller’s death has left viewers of Netflix's Death of the Pastor's Wife with lingering questions and confusion.
The three-part Netflix documentary focuses on the death of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old worship leader who died from suicide in April 2024.
It also follows her life and marriage to South Carolina pastor John-Paul 'JP' Miller, and the questions that arose after her death.

Two days after serving her husband with divorce papers, the 30-year-old was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on 27 April, 2024.
In a handwritten affidavit, she had written: "Since the day we became husband and wife, I have been abused in every way I can think of — emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically."
Mica’s loved ones shared their concerns about the relationship in the documentary, and alleged that it became increasingly controlling and toxic.
Before her death, Mica called 911 and told the operator she planned to take her own life, before asking them to trace the call so her family would be able to find her body.
The North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) ruled Mica’s death a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to the report, as reported by FITS News, investigators located two spent casings and one live round near the riverbank close to where Mica's body was found.
Questions over the multiple bullet casings found at the scene of Mica's death
Netflix viewers have now started questioning elements of the case, including details about the bullets found at the scene.
“I’m still confused by how/why there were 2 (or 3?) bullets/casings at the scene,” one viewer remarked on Reddit.
“I can’t get over the fact that there are multiple SPENT casings at the crime scene. That just doesn’t add up,” another viewer commented.
Meanwhile, someone on Facebook asked the questions: “Was the first round fired intentionally as a test shot? Was it an accidental discharge?”
Other viewers speculated and attempted to explain the detail by suggesting she may have fired the gun to test it, before taking her own life.
Chilling allegations made in the Netflix documentary
The documentary outlines how Mica attempted to leave her relationship with JP, with interviewees describing allegations that she was stalked and harassed by him.
The filmmakers use home videos, text messages, footage from John-Paul’s church services, Mica’s journals and interview testimonies from her loved ones to describe her final days.
Her family continue searching for answers and question the events leading up to Mica’s death.
The documentary does not claim that Mica was murdered and acknowledges that her death was officially ruled a suicide, while exploring and examining allegations of coercive control and concerns raised by her family.
JP Miller was not found guilty of Mica's murder, nor was he treated as a suspect, as her death was officially ruled a suicide.
What has happened to JP Miller?
JP was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2025 on two charges: cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.
The cyberstalking charge alleges a pattern of harassment between November 2022 and Mica’s death, including tracking, repeated calls and texts, alleged vehicle tampering and the sharing of the intimate image.
He has pleaded not guilty, and has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death.
The trial has been delayed several times and is now scheduled for the October 2026 term while JP, who remarried in 2025, remains free on bond.
