Woody Harrelson explains how he found out his dad might have ‘hooked up’ with Matthew McConaughey’s mum

Over the years, many people have noticed a strange similarity between A-listers Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

Now, Harrelson has revealed that they might actually be related, after some seriously awkward conversations were had.

The Zombieland actor revealed he has known McConaughey's mum, Mary Kathlene, for over 25 years.

The duo first revealed three years ago that they might be more than just co-workers.

Now, Harrelson has told Variety about how the chat with the woman he calls 'MaMac' went down.

“She told me, ‘I knew your father,’ like, you know, with the ellipses, ‘I knew… your father,’” in a nudge nudge, wink wink way.

“So, I'm thinking, ‘Well, that's weird that she's never told me this [in] 25 years’” he added.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, it turns out that she was 'feeling good' thanks to the wine she had been drinking.

It seems it might have loosened her lips a little at that point.

“She tells me, and I'm thinking, ‘Well, what's behind this story?’” he continued. “And then I find out they weren't just friends—there was a little more to it.”

The plot thickens...

They starred together in True Detective, and are set to star in a new show, called, ironically enough, Brothers (previously titled Brother From Another Mother), where they play fictional versions of themselves.

McConaughey opened up about his mother's revelation too on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast.

"In Greece a few years ago, we're sitting around talking about how close we are and our families, and my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.' Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.' It was a loaded K-N-E-W," he echoed.

He said they went on to 'unpack what this "knew" meant, awkward.

McConaughey said they 'did some math and found out that [Woody's] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce."

"Then there's possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew' moment."

The big question is, why don't they just do a DNA test and find out once and for all?

"Look, it's a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let's do [it],' because what's the skin in it for him?" Matthew insisted.

"It's a little harder for me because he's asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you're trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?' I got a little more skin in the game."

“You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line,” he added.

"And that’s part of our bromance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew," he said sweetly.

"And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”

You can understand the confusion.
