Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson claim there’s ‘evidence’ they’re brothers

The two Hollywood A-listers have fuelled the fan speculation regarding their alleged sibling connection in a new podcast appearance

There are a whole bunch of famous sibling duos when it comes to Hollywood.

Whether it's Jonah Hill and his sister Beanie Feldstein, the Olsen sisters, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, and, of course, the Hemsworth brothers - it's clear that the entertainment industry has a bunch of family connections.

And, for years now, fans have been utterly convinced that Dazed and Confused star Matthew McConaughey and Zombieland fan-favourite Woody Harrelson should be added to such a list, with many swearing they're actually brothers.

The long-running rumour gained mainstream traction a few years back, in 2023, when Harrelson claimed he had 'proof' that McConaughey might be his younger bro.

Speaking to Esquire at the time, Harrelson claimed that McConaughey's father refused to go to the hospital with the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actor's mum, Mary McCabe, telling her: "That ain’t my son."

The theory goes that McConaughey's mum had a brief fling with Harrelson's father, which is when the Interstellar star might have been, um, conceived. There's even been talk of a DNA test, too.

Fuelling the internet frenzy, the pair of actors have now even put forward that there is actually 'evidence' of such speculation.

Speaking on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, which was released earlier this month (7 January), McConaughey opened up about his relationship with his True Detective co-star and close friend Harrelson.

He reflected on the very night that questions were first raised surrounding who his actual biological father is.

"Our kids have always thought we were brothers, or at least that we acted like brothers," McConaughey explained. "About eight years ago, we're in Greece with both our families, and my mum's there as well, and I think [Harrelson's] kids pulled out some sort of picture from high school that was me, and everyone looked at it and thought it was him."

He carried on: "All of a sudden, out of nowhere, my mom, who was probably on her third glass of Kendall-Jackson, goes, 'Oh, Woody, I knew... your father'.

"It was the perfect pause, ellipses as you like to put it, that even my young kids got the innuendo. [...] From that night on, this mystery has started."

The pair are currently working together on a brand-new AppleTV+ series called Brothers, in which they'll star as themselves, while their 'families' will be portrayed by actors.

The plot will follow the two actors' friendship, which ends up meeting several hurdles when their fictional families move in together onto McConaughey's Texas ranch.
